How much play should there be in the counter balancer
in a 1999 FE 600E?? I thought the answer should
be none!! Has anyone found one yet??? Are there updated
bearings for this old machine?? it has roller bearings
(needle bearings) in one side and ball on the other did the
failure occur from these 8O

eman369,

I tried looking through the '99 workshop manual and as far as I can tell, there is no counter balancer on a '99 Fe600??? It doesn't seem to be covered in the manual anyways..... And if thats the case I think that I would throw both sets of bearings away and forget about installing them. Sorry I could not be of more help, have you downloaded a copy of the workshop manual from the download section on the left of the screen?

Regards,

Thanks Sandskipper

I am hoping that when somebody out here
replaced the pieces, they noticed a difference 8O
in the bearings. I am still looking to FIX not
jerry-rig (sorry Jerry).

The counter balancer design on your 99 was started in 97 and carried through out the 2000 model year.

Page 44 through 47 of the 99 Workshop Manual cover the Electric starter and the balancer.

I stripped my 2000 FE 501E at 299.8 hours and replaced all bearings but the ball bearing, roller bearing, and needle bearing on the starter/counter balancer. They were in excellent condition, and did not need replacing. They were smooth and did not have any noticeable radial play.

The 99 Workshop Manual and 2000 Parts manual are available as downloads in 'Downloads' under 'Resources'

Hope this helps,

Joe

The 97 - 2K counter balance assy has a larger freewheeling (sprag) clutch than the earlier engine and the bearings are different, but it is troublefree. Don't know of any "updates" to the bearings on the counterbalancer in that model, but the bearings in all of mine have been trouble free and usually don't require attention during a rebuild ( I put new ones in anyway). By the way... NAPA bearings are made by SKF and are readily available.
