i do like to run things past you lads!

i had an 8 week enforced lay off as bits trickled in and i decided to go in deeper. essentially i have used the same headgasket again, changed to my dealers spare radiator, fitted a new impellor and clip and done everything else the same as usual.

torqued the head to 45Nm as per manual. however i've lost coolant at the last two rides and this weekend, as my race report says, it ran hot and also unsettled at low revs.

i pulled about a 1 pint out the rad. had the rad pumped up today and the only leak was the pressure at the cap despite some dinks and chinks in the metalwork.

checked the oil tonight and there is no green and no grey, no cloudiness. just oil!

new cap and oil seal on the way.

dealer said i could get three times approx out of a headgasket. this one had done just the previous weekend.

i intend starting it up and literally letting it tickover until i see something.

Hi Taffy,

Barring no external leaks and / or oil contamination:

First:
On a cool engine remove the radiator cap and while blipping the throttle watch for steam and / or bubbles.

Second:
Warm the engine, (cap installed / pressure in cooling system) pull the spark plug and look for obvious signs of coolant ingestion (ie a steam cleaned spark plug, combustion chamber, piston, etc. and / or water droplets on the plugs tip).

Hope this helps.

I started having overheating problems just after I fitted a set of radiator guards. Made several changes to the radiator guards to try and improve the air flow but no good. On single track or big hills it would still overheat.

In the end I replaced the radiator cap and the problem disappeared. The fitting of the rad guards was just a coincidence.

I re used my head gasket and on the first ride it leaked a bit of coolant out the side. I was running water and maxima cool aide, so i could see the distict purple stains on my motor. I retorqued them and it stoped.

awesome help there from all three of you. thanks. wouldn't even have thought of your tips dale!!!!!!!

thanks again.

To Taffy

Have you checked the w/pump housing - small hole at front that lets coolant out if the seal is naffed? The seal is easy to damage when putting the transmission cover back on over the shaft.

I put on some oil on all shafts before reassembling  Then with the motor running, you'll see this few drops of oil coming out the w/pump hole (and maybe a few dops of coolant) - but then it should stop :D
