I just bought a new counter shaft seal kit "to fix some leaking oil" and would like to swap out the front sprocket at the same time for the SM setup. Was wondering what gearing everyone was using when they covert the Fe's?

Also, like I said I bought this Kit P#"00050000941" but it comes with two spacer seals. One gold and one silver. The guy at the shop said the new bikes use the gold one but didn't know if they would work for just any bike.

Heres a picture of what all came with it. The top two are the parts in question.

14/38 14/40 14/42 I like 14/42 till you get use to it but FS570 can with 14/40 works OK for Me. Be sure to grease the seals.

Is that gearing for the FS model or the FE model? From what I understand the FS model has a close ratio trans and the FE uses a Wide ratio. So I would think Ideally I would want as large a front sprocket as possible and as small as possible in the rear.

I believe fs/fe ratios are the same...
If so and you put 15 on front (biggest that will fit) and 38 rear the gearing is super long....
I currently have 14/43 on my fs570 its a little short but bike still capable of 170-180 sometimes I switch to 15 front....

Bought the FS570 used it came with 14/40. FE570 put on the 14/42 was high but got use to it can't tell if gearing are different between FS and FE when I get the time I'll check

Thanks allot Rainerio. Yeah, still not sure what would be best. Though, I do know I would like First gear to have some sense of usefulness...

San Francisco/Bay Area lots of Hills so think about that. As geared 14/40 75mph no problem at all. Had it geared 14/48 55mph maybe 60mph

I just checked the book and it says the FE has gear ratio is the following

Primary Transmission 33:76
1st 14:36
2nd 17:32
3rd 19:28
4th 22:26
5th 24:23
6th 26:21

That's all I could find.

In the 2011 manuals FS and FE gearing is the same. final drive from manuals FS is 14/38 and FE is 14/42. For off-road I use 14/48 but thinking 14/52 would be better.

when my chain needs replacing I will go for 15/44 on my fs 570
Will suit almost any riding... for very short tracks than I can go to 14/44 or very high speed tracks go to 15/42 but I don't think that will be necessary because with 15/44 the bike will easily do 180+ km/h

I'm thinking about doing a 14/40. I am not sure how well a 15 would fit up front so I might just go with a 14 than go lower in the rear like a 40. Isn't it every tooth up front is the equivalent of 2 down in the rear?

Hey, has anyone found out which spacer I should use? Like I said I would prefer to use the new gold one. But I am not sure if it will work.

I think the matter of sprocket sizes is a matter of personal preference.
Sure, there are ratios which are more suited to certain types of riding, but take that as a guideline and experiment from there. Are you planning on sumo racing or just to play around on the tarmac? For me, those would have different sprockets.

I tend to run taller ratios, to get my top speed up and rpm down, for the type of riding I do. But, I found the bikes more than capable of riding in ANY terrain with my chosen ratio, with only a slight compromise.

As an example, I got my FE501 '03 with 14/50 ratio, and I found it way too aggressive, having to fight keeping the front wheel down on hard acceleration etc. I changed to 14/48 and it felt much the same, so I went to 15/48, which for me worked very well as an all round ratio. I think 15/50 would be slightly better as I have now a bit of a gap between 3rd and 4th gear, when riding in thick sand, changing from 3rd to 4th gear, I found the bike labours a bit to get the revs up, but it does eventually. Aside from the thick sand, I have had no issues riding MX type stuff, trails, woods, hillclimbs and even very technical rocky terrain. Though I do abuse the clutch a bit in the technical stuff. With a bit more skill in technical riding, If i can get my speed up I wouldn't be so heavy on the clutch.

Obviously, SM is different to offroad, but I believe experimenting will be your best bet.
As a guideline I agree with Rainero, 14/42 will be a good place to start.

I use 14/42 on my FS, but i think 14/43 14/44 would probably be better to make use of 6th around town.
