Hi there,

I have a problem with my '08 FE550. Basically to give you a
bit of background on it- My last enduro at Manby at one particular
section of the track my club laid it out far too close to a water
hole. Riders kept knocking the tape down as they rode past and I
didn't see it as I came round. I took a line slightly to the right and
ended up nose diving straight into the water, the bike was completely
under but luckily it cut out before it went in. There was about 6
riders who did the same thing.

Anyway I didn't run the bike afterwards, and when I got home
stripped it all down, drained and cleaned it out. I've flushed the oil
out about 8 or 9 times to get rid of the contaminated water and it
finally looks ok now. I went out for the first ride yesterday and
everything seemed fine but then it started hopping in and out of gears
and eventually once it got into 5th gear it just revved up with a
clatery sound and had no drive whatsoever. It wouldn't go into 6th atall. 1st to
4th gear were mostly fine. We're going to have a look at it tonight
but am I right in thinking this is the clutch plates knackered? The
bike was fine before that incident, it only has 15.1 hrs on it. As
it's a wet clutch could the contaminated water have got in and wrecked
the plates?

How much am I looking at for clutch plates?

Cheers,
Steve

I've gotten water in my oil before with no real consequences. Normally I have just flushed it a couple of times and then its good to go. Also, I doubt the clutch would be ruined by water in the oil, especially after flushing the oil several times, either way its pretty easy to check the clutch. Did you drain the float to make sure there is no water in there?

So it has drive in 1st to 4th?

If that is true then it doesn't sound liike a clutch problem, especially with the clattery sound. The clattery sound makes me think it's some sort of engagement problem. Does the box shift properly on the stand?

Yeah at first all gears were fine but then it was only 1st to 4th. All the gears shift properly on the stand. My boots are still wearing in so that may actually be why it's not shifting into 6th. But yes it had no drive in 5th.

We've had a look at the plates, each one had an identical scratch mark on them from the friction rings. We smoothed them down and are going to put them back in & see what happens. They are still bang on the 2.0mm thickness so aren't worn down at all. The bolt for the clutch basket did look like it'd been turned though which is surprising as the previous owner only did 6.7hrs. Whether he did something or the bike wasn't setup right from new god knows. All I know was it was fine before the water and now has this problem.

I'll go out for a ride and keep you posted.

Update- I put the plates back in and went out for a ride today about 100miles. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 6th are perfectly ok (I can now shift into 6th fine). But 5th gear still has no drive and revs up. Everything else is working, it wasn't too much of a problem, for todays ride out anyway, I just short shifted 4th to 6th. The plates are fine, so basically it's a problem with 5th gear....

neutral is still two turns out on the star by the sounds of it.

regards

Taffy
