Just purchased a new 2010 FE390 and am an intermediate ride, love the bike, but contrary to what everyone says, I find the suspension a bit stiff in the front at my pace, which is probably far below the pace of the racers that think it is too soft.

Right now, I'm 18 out on R and C up front and would like it a bit more plush, but dont know anything about suspension. What do some of you intermediate riders set yours to?

I ride slow technical badly rutted single-track, hitting logs full-on, at grade 2/3 level.

I am 98 kgs fully dressed with helmet, water etc.

I am currently set up soft at:
23 clicks Front Compression
20 clicks Front Rebound

Fizz

Welcome to the forum. I am not that crash hot a rider, probably below intermediate.
There is a good post here:

Where are you from? You can add that in your signature.
I am from Sydney and used Frank Pons from Biketek http://www.biketek.com.au to do mine. User Steve on here helped me with the clicker settings. Frank runs a suspension day at Steve's place every now and then. Bike is definitely heaps better after it was tweaked by Frank and Steve. Very plush. I noticed my FE570 was harsh when compared to my mates DRZ400.
DaleEO might be able to help you if you are in the US. He knows his suspension inside out.

I tried to create a signature and I must not have enough posts or something because it won't let me :(

Thank you for the suggestions, I'm going to give them a shot. I wish I knew more about suspension!

Oh yeah, you need 5 posts but looks like you are sorted now.
I remember pulling out of a petrol station then driving down a highway in San Jose on the wrong side of the road at 4:00am in the morning. The rest of the Australians in the car didn't even notice. I looked at them and said, "I think I am on the wrong side of the road but don't worry I will fix it up at the next intersecton." I was sober just for the record.

Me too, it's like a black art. I remember seeing all the shims (or whatever they are called) out of my forks on the bench and just thinking fark

Hopefully you got the owners manual with the bike, there is good detailed information on suspension settings in it. Check all your clicker settings and set them to the Standard setting. If you find that they were already at the Standard settings start by going two clicks out on the compression and removing the preload from the front forks. That should get you started at least.
