isn't there a little valve or gate in the engine that you can clean. i would check the old archives again but, well, they're gone!

it was one that simon used to cover a bit.

Yeah, it's the reed valve that controls oil flow from the crank to the clutch area and stops it running back down to the crank.

Bits can get caught behind it leaving it open as well as it bending over time. When it's worn or stuck open you'll get loads of oil blown out of the crank case breather tube.

Is that the one you're refering to?

Simon

I believe it is the crankcase reed valve you speak of, Taffy. I would also be interested in knowing what this does and whether it needs servicing or replacing every once in awhile.

Whoops! I see Simon jumped in before my post and answered the question. Thanks Simon!

The manual says to inspect/clean @ 100 hours. I was told by my dealer that the bike will start to smoke alot if the reed valve needs replacement.

Simon

yes, that's the one! now the "reed" i have, is angled out and away from the left crankcase wall. i will undo the two flat-blde head screws to inspect.

Taffy, if it's angled out and away from the case it's a good idea to replace it. Don't forget to apply some threadlock to those screws when you re-install them!

Cheers,
Simon

there is a metal thing that is angled out and away to support the reed when it opens. take it off and you will see the fiberglass reed.

Is this "reed valve" behind the clutch cover? Another thing I should have checked when I "re-checked" the gears?? And how can you stop the kick starter seal from leaking?????? I'm on my 4th seal, and 2nd gear shaft seal?

the gear shaft seals go rarely. the kickstart ones go as soon as you fit them. a bloke in the UK put an 'o' ring behind his. there may be other cures on here.

my Q was from before i took the curved metal plate off and when i did the reed's seal to the hole was good and the reed was true and straight.

put threadlock on the screws as well.

thanks lads!

Yes, the reed valve is behind the clutch cover.

In regard to the kick start, has your dealer been supplying you with a seal or an oring?
Husaberg changed to a seal during 02 but it was a waste of time. If you have a seal, replace it with an oring. I believe its 18mm ID with either a 3 or 4mm cross section. Grab a couple of each from a bearing shop and try fitting the 4mm first.

Thanks for that. I actually got the seals from a bearing shop, but I will try the o'ring next.
