I am too tired to type so I will keep it short. I named my FE650 Clamidia because everytime I ride her she burns me. Well lots of flooding here and I tried to cross a pond/stream and much to my suprise I was almost up to my sensative parts in no time. I kept it up right, and I don't think any water got high enough for the intake but is there anything else I should worry about?
No joy on the E Start after I took a break from pushing the bike clear I kicked it a few times and the kick starter shaft broke off. Pushed the bike 5kms back into town. Please tell me someone else has managed to break a kick start lever or am I the only one with a bike that punishes it's rider for long periods of neglect? I hope she can't read my mind because the whole way I was thinking about buying a Kawasaki.

Dude!!! Those don't break....usually. Good thing you have a couple of spares :D Now you know why I own more than one berg at a time :)

Sorry to hear. Best of luck in getting her sorted. I keep watching in case I repeat your act, highly likely knowing me.

My 650 started running like crap last night and since I broke another tail light bulb got me pulled over by what turned out to be three cops. The suburbs are definitely a place I would not want to live, even the most corrupt ones. I was just given a verbal warning but come on! Is there nothing else going on in town?!

Cheers!

Well my theory is that the set screw must have vibrated out and the kick start shaft was lifting out of it's set point and the force of me kicking it over while in the weak position is what tore it off. When I get back up to the bike (I ditched her at the airport outside of town)I'll try the screw and see if it was not in all the way.
I have never been know to be all that gentle on things but I agree those things are not supposed to break. On the plus side of things I met a surfer on the way home he's got 9 boards and a hut on the beach and I am welcome to come over anytime I want so always a positive coming from events I get to start surfing again!!! I am also over the little spat with my bike and we're in love again. lol off to rescue now.

I broke a kickstart lever and got the newer replacement (06 onward?). Then I broke the kickstart shaft and got the newer one of them too so you're not the only one! I posted some pics of the process in my gallery if you're interested.

You coming down for the DSBC Orca Run May 9 south island?

The set screw was loose and my theory was correct.
I`ll be back to work mid April and gone for a while I suspect so going to miss the Orca run again sadly. Stupid jobs.

I have a 550 with a broken off kickstart shaft as well, can you explain to me about this set screw? I am new to the Berg brand as I came over from KTM RFS bikes and would like to know what to do to fix this and make it proper. I already have the new shaft and have not completely installed yet, can the kick start portion of the decomp be removed and this issue not happen again?

There is a screw in the end of the shaft that holds the lever onto the splines. If this comes loose the lever can work it's way off the spline which increases the leverage on the shaft and can cause it to break.

Watch out for the timing marks on the gears when you replace it. As you take the clutch basket off the timing can be lost. Best to do this with the piston at TDC on the comp stroke so the valves are all closed, thus no tension in the valve train to move the gears as the clutch comes off. Ok,
Let me ask this another way,,,

Can the kickstart decomp lever be removed completely and have the bike still be able to be started with a normal kick process? I see the bikes already have a standard auto decomp just like the KTM RFS motors do and a standard mechanical unit on the left bar for rolling the motor over past TDC to begin the starting process. So why the need for the kicker decomp? Mine looks a bit mangled and I would like to remove it completely and do away with it.

Thanks for any help on this. BTW is there a thread already about this issue?? I bought this bike with a broken kicker shaft and it looke to me like the kicker mechanism is what is making the shaft and kicker assy bind and break the shaft.
