I got a FC 550/4 02, and think it is time to replace the fork oil.
Do i need to remowe the fork from the bike, or is it possible to drain the oil and refill it when the fork still is on the bike.

Needs som advises.

Lucky!

No, you have to remove the forks from the bike. Open the top nut, and with 2 spanners remove the spring. Drain the oil but, at this stage the oil don't come out completly. You have to pump the inner cartridge and drain the oil, repeat this operation until you fil no stroke from the cartridge. Then the oil is completly drained.

Lucky, if you are doing the fork oil, save yourself some time and money and replace the seals aswell. And it would also be wise to replace the dust caps with CRF450 ones. They are 1mm smaller and will not leak. I have had mine in for 15 months now and still no leaks.

Thank you for the advises. I have just downloaded the WP manual, an except of a special recomended tool, the seal replacement looks stright forward. Have anyone done this whitout the WP tool "T502S" ?

Do I have to remove the spring to change the oil, or is this just to be able to measure how much oil is in there?

Oil level is set with forks compressed and spring out, so yes springs need removed.

undo the top nut and the bottom nut slightly WITH the forks in the bike! it will not leak if all you do is loosen a 1/3 turn.

when you get the forks out you can do everything yourself without special tools.

to pull the forks apart you have to slam them hard and trust yourself that you're doing it right.

to push the new seals in, cut an old seal once and then with the new seal placed ready to go in: wrap the old seal around the leg and using a rubber hammer whack the old seal until it is also 'in' the fork leg all the way around. then get a screwdriver and prise the old one out at the cut you made.

it's fairly easy, you just have to 'back yourself' when it comes to pulling the leg apart.

go into 'the doc' and you'll find tons of info in the fork part.

I think I'm able to do this, but now the problem i sknowing how much oil to punt in there.. Why can't this be 0.6dl for instance, and not 10cm up the bore?

didn't understand that.

bore? is that the leg?

6dl? what is that?

Taffy

I meant inside of the bore of the fork tube.. Also 6dl= 6 decilitres=0,6litres :)

I've just did my forks, and after my calculations 13cm equalled 6,5 dl of oil. Does this sound plausible?

stop.

the fork will want about 475cc of oil to be spot on but you should go through the correct procedure or you'll never have a reference for what you have done.

That's strange. I measured what came out of the fork and this was also approx 650ml....Untouched since Husaberg factory!!!!

i get two legs out of a litre bottle. the spare ends up in the syringe (fairy liquid bottle!).
