<CENTER>After riding my new '03 FE400E for a couple of weeks now I'm starting to dig into it bit more & discovered that it has a 15 tooth front & 42 tooth rear..not exactly what I'm looking for in the narrow, muddy, rocky trails up here in New England.

Now I can find rear sprockets no problem thru Parts Unlimited but no front.

Anybody know a good source?

And what are you trailriders using for sprockets?

Thanks guys!

Hey Atomic,

Are you, FC501east, and I the only ones on this forum from New England??

I'm in SW CT. Been tryin to notice other yankees (Yeah, you prob like the Sox :( ) on the forum. Seems like we are a rare breed...

My 02 fe501e came stock 15/48 and felt too tall for trail riding so I went
with a 14 counter sprocket. I got the sprocket from motoexotica.

?

I use Stealth sprockets. Front 14, Rear 50, just about to try 48 rear, both rears are alloy and a DID 520VM chain(X ring)

I use the racer x speciall.
It's like 90 bones.
You get a steel rear sprocket and a o-ring chain and steel front.
I run 13/52
Remember the lower front gear you have the weaker it is. I run a 13 with no problem for years and this set up. Only had to adjust once after intal stretch. I ride every weekend.

I dont get what you mean? The smaller the front sprocket the "weaker it is''? With 13/52 you must be in top gear within 50 yards of your car?

Actuly I cant keep traction with a 14/49. I went to this for hill climbs and insane exceleration. I top out around 85+. The smaller the front gear the weaker because it has alot of torque on it. So if you have a hige powered bike like the berg it's a bad idea. They break teeth real easy. Now if there biggere there much stronger more metal I guess.

<CENTER>Thanks for all the input guys!

Looks like I'm going to go with a 13/48 for now.

Once I get it done I'll post an update.

As it is now, I can't "crawl" thru the woods & tight trails w/o problems. My buddy has a FC400 and he's got a 15/48 set up & he's going to be switching to a 13 front as well.

And Parsko..no Red Sox fan here! lol..
Bruins yes..

i know this is at your discretion but from my gearing and others they clearly indicate that 14 x 48 is trail gearing and 13 x 48 is for amazing acceleration and in my case racing.

if you never go over 100 yards in a straight line-you are right. if not read it again and i think you just gotta say 14 x 48.

<CENTER>Most of our riding is rock crawling and winding narrow trails filled with tree roots & mud. Most riding is spent at very low speeds. My current problem is that I can't go the low speed I need to without stalling the bike. Not much "straightaway" anywhere, that was why I decided to go with the 13 in the front. But, if it doesn't work out..somebody will get a great deal on eBay! :p

That is exactly what we used to ride in the north west. 13/48 will be perfect for you. Alot of the trails up there were very steep so I started wit a 13/49 setup that worked awesome. Then I went to a 52 rear sprocket, that really helped in the steep hill climbs that were technical and very tight.

I got a 13 on the front and a 48 or 49 on the back.Works good trail rideing.I have a 12,ran it to see which was better, just like the 13 best.Works good because there is no real good place around here to open it up.The highest gear was 4th and then I ran out of space.Good luck.

I'm using a Husqvarna 14T front ('cause I had one) and 48T rear. A Husky front may be an option if you can't get 'berg ones. The spline fits OK but you have to fit a 1mm or so thick shim beside it to hold the output shaft sleeve in place over the o-ring as it is thinner across the boss. Also the boss is centred on the 'berg where it is all out one side on the Husky, but it still works OK.

I'm thinking of gearing down further as I like mountain goat country but can't handle it at any pace.

I think the difference between the gear here could be down to the carbs?
Are any of you 13th front blokes running an FCR?
