Just compared my chain with a brand newey, and after 1300 kms it doesnt appear to be all that stretched, but the rollers in the middle of the links "move" a fair bit? It is probably 1 mm longer over the 18 pins.
According to the manual you measure 18 pins and they shouldnt be any longer than 272 mm MAX, well I measured the new chain and this is the exact length? Why do we measure the length from the outside and not the inside against the rollers(or do you?) when as far as I can see the "rollers" are the items that get buggered and inturn bugger the sprockets?
I use DID X'ring chain(520) and have also tried the very expensive DID ERT 520 chain but I usually get aprox 1300/1400 kms, is this good?
I also clean them with kero (aprox every 300 kms) and lube after each wash(which is after a ride) and check the chain "slack" before each ride, so I beleive I look after the chains quite well.
Thanks.

I usually go through 2 rear sprockets to one front sprocket and one chain. That is usually around 1500-1800 k.

I have never measured over the 18 pins but when I compare the overall length of the old chain to a new chain it has stretched about 1/2 a link.

A few months ago when I was due a new chain and sprockets I decided to go for a steel rear sprocket from Chain Gang. Its slightly heavier but everything will hopefully last much longer.

Hi,

I have never measured the length of my chain at all.
I ride the chain over a long period, maybe one season,
an if the rear sprocket is worn, or is has lost some teeth
I know when it´s time for a new set of chain and sprockets.
It could seem to be unprofessional but it works. But I must
say, I don´t look on my speedo how many km I have been ridden,
cos of counting in hours. Most of the time I´m riding on a track.
I never had a cracked chain.

Hey Twisty, wouldnt that be the other way round, 2 fronts to 1 rear sprocket? My fronts seem to wear out alot faster than rears.
ps, have you got anything left over from the Berg that you would like to donate before you change?

Same for me my front was toast compared to my rear. I went with the sidewinder trymoly set & chain it was kind of pricey but hopefully they will be worth it?

Scully,
I have always gone through more rears (alloy), same goes for most of the guys I ride with. Perhaps it has something to do with the terrain I ride in, some of the areas have a lot of sand.

Its the main reason I decided to go for a steel rear this time.

I'll let you know about the leftovers.

i still have the chain and sprockets on my bike from when i bought it nearly a year ago and have done close to 10000 km on it still the origanal chain unbroken  front sprocket has 2 teeth missing from it and will be getting replaced now but the rear is still fine and i think its the origanal rear sprocket on it aswell 8O i clean my chain with degreaser and a tooth brush after every ride and use shell teflon spray on it it actually dries and does not attract dust and so forth any hoo ill stop rambling now thats my 2c

cheers doug

????

Doug, I think you are having a lend of us? 10,000 kms in a year on the same sprockets and chain? I dont think so.
If the front has teeth missing I think you will find the chain and most possibly the rear sprocket are buggered to. It doesnt take a "break" for the chain to be rat ****.
Twisty, I use alloy rears to,but they dont seem to wear out any quicker than steels. Remember a few years ago you could get nylon rears?

i used the bike on the road when i first got it <and had my licence>and was using it to travel from brisbane to ipswitch aprox 50km each way this is when i was very uneducated about husabergs and was also changing my oil at 1000 km intervals 8O <was using about a litre of oil over said km> so belive me or dont im not here to impress any one just stating the truth and the rear sprocket is worn but still perfectly good and chain well it will do :D

cheers doug

i have done 6000km on my FE501e 2003 with original chain and sprocket. this i sin about 8 months. in summer i do a tank of juice everyday. no commuting, but i am partial to the odd wheelie down the road overtaking cars.

i am nearly out of adjustment in swingarm. have never taken chain off and cleaned it. lots of dust here. chain looks dry as after 5 mins of riding after it gets lubed.

Have fun
Jeff
