Does it make sense to spend any of my hard earned cash on aftermarket chain guides and slides (like TM Designworks)? Or does it make more sense to purchase something like a swingarm guard (like the bulletproof guard on 70 Degree Racing's website)? Or neither, the stock set-up is just fine? Your help is very much appreciated.

The advantage of a guide like TMD or BRP is that they flex when hit, then spring back. The stock ones wrapped in aluminum move if hit hard enough, and then stay moved.

Not much in it though. Probably depends on the rocks you ride.

I've got both on my 2010 Husaberg FE 390. I like the Bulletproof Chain Guide Guard because we ride in some nasty, rocky areas ... and I hate walking out. <grin> I'm running the TM Designworks chain guide and buffers because they hold up so much better than the stock units ... and do much less wear and tear on your chain. (The stock chain guide material wears and grooves out fast ... and starts rubbing on the side plates and master links.)

I had a full TM setup on my WR450 and to be honest wasn't very impressed with longevity. I don't know if its just because that paticular bike is hard on the guides or not. My FE has 50hrs on it and the bottom guide is in ok shape, theres some wear on the master link clip but not enough to replace everything yet.

I purchased the T.M. Designworks 09-10 Husaberg Slide-N-Guide kit KTM-215-BU. With the Factory Edition rear 2 rear Chain guide.

Are you ment to leave the Black Husaberg 78004060000 Chain Gaurd off when using the T.M. Designwroks Chain Guides?

There was no hole in the Front TM Slider to mount the Chain Guard screw towards the front.
The rear of the Chain Guard does not fit in the Rear TM Chain Guide to attached the nut to hold it.

[ET: Yes, I believe so.]

There was no hole in the Front TM Slider to mount the Chain Guard screw towards the front.
The rear of the Chain Guard does not fit in the Rear TM Chain Guide to attached the nut to hold it.

[ET: I've got exactly the same setup and had the exact issue.]

[ET: I even drilled a hole here in the TM Designs slider for the chain guard mounting screw.]

[ET: But I got real frustrated at this point trying to mount the front/bottom of the stock chain splash guard.
I was on the verge of trying to drill a new hole and tap it for a new, longer bolt. Then I got fed up, said "ah screw it" and left the stock chain splash guard off. Which has worked fine.

You might get it work there - but it will take you a *lot* of work. Ultimately it's up to you as to how bad you want it mounted. Best of luck, eh. (g) E-Ticket]

Thanks so much E-Ticket, if it works without the Chain Guard for you that is good enough for me to leave it off. You're a champion
Have fun at the Force ride too.

I am impressed with the T.M. Designworks guides so far. They just look stronger than the stock guides.
I also carefully measured and drilled the hole for the front Chain Guard screw in the TM Front Guide, then got to the back and thought WTF 8O that don't fit either

I also had trouble mounting the front TM Chain Guide, then read the instructions again and it said to leave it in the oven if it is cold. I tried that with oven on 100C and after a few minutes it was warm and bolted straight up. The picture below shows how far it missed by when it was cold:

You're welcome, mate!

And the TM Designs stuff is *very* strong... thank goodness. How do I know this? Well, the the "Flying Ant" is only 5'2" riding a lowered KTM 250 XCF-W ... and she ... ummm .... *hits* a lot of stuff. lol.

Really looking forward to the Force 4 event and riding in Colorado. It's been on "The List" for a long time! (g)

Hi Guys,
T.M. Designworks support are very quick to respond via emails, so that is good news for anyone wanting to use their products. Here is their response to my question of why the Husaberg Chain Guard did not fit to the T.M. Designworks Chain Guides:

They are not designed to be installed with the( stock chain guard)
Thank you TMD Sales

Hello everyone. Wether or not you run the TMD guides and slides I would definately use the BPD swingarm brace, those little tabs that hold on the chain guide are not that strong and if you ride in alot of rocks you could snap one off :( . I run one on my 570 and I can see the abuse that it has taken and I have never had a problem. Look at the GNCC and enduro cross bikes and almost all of them run the BPD brace, their radiator gaurds are also awesome by the way :D.

Yup ... already have the BPD guards on both mine and the wife's bike.
And yes, you only have to look at them to see the abuse/hits they're taking.

Until KTM/Husaberg changes or beefs up their chain guide mounting tabs .... putting the BPD chain guide guards on is an automatic step for us.

My Bulletproof Swingarm Guard fitted up nice with the T.M. Designworks Rear Chain guide as the picture above shows.
Got my Bulletproof Guards from Dale at 70 Degree Racing

Hey I received another email from T.M. Designworks this morning. Good service goes along way IMHO:

David,
After reviewing the installation instructions last night we are definitely going to make mention about not being able to use the stock chain guard. We have been informed by another customer that you can remove some of the material under the slider were it over laps the stock chain guard and use a longer bolt and it will work.
We have not done this so we cannot confirm it. Our installation is on a XC in the states and they do not use the guard.

Thank you for the right up on the forum and hope you will be happy with your TM products.
Thanks again
Jerry

I also noticed when looking at the FX Husabergs parts list, they don't use the Chain Guard either.

IMO the BDP swingarm guide is a must if you ride in rocky terrain, way too many people have had the tabs break off their swingarms without it.

The TMD slider stuff also holds up much longer than stock, I know my buddy put at least 15.000 kms on it, will have to check when and if he replaced it as he has 25.000 kms now.

I am looking for a Chain Slider for my 1996 fe600. Are there any NOS still around, or an easily modified slider from a vendor for this bike?

I've sent mine back. if you need to bake it then it should come with apron and baking powder.
I'm passed off. for 110 pounds and needs drilling and baking. pooo
