Hi All,

Any body got any good hints for loosening a seized chain adjuster apart from sheearing it off and drilling it out.

Sparks.

Hi Sparks,

Look for a thread recently on a stuck kickstarter - lots of good ideas for freeing up stuck parts. :)

I don't know about Bergs but every other dirtbike I have owned has taken on water inside the swingarm and so I drill tiny holes on the bottom just before the adjusters to drain this water out.

Cheers and good luck

Mark

Take off the swing arm, stand it on the engine mounting end and start soaking with kroil. http://www.kanolabs.com/ If you have a 2001 and later bike your life is probably going to be easier and this is why.

More than likely you will be able to get the bolt free after soaking it with kroil for perhaps several days. However, if you do get it free you will probably want to cut the head off of the adjuster bolt with a dremel with a small wheel, cut a small slot in the bolt with the dremel or a hack saw blade and screw it through and let it drop into the swingarm. With the 01 and later swingarms you will have already popped the plugs to get the shock off and you can get the bolt out there.

The problem is, the bolt on the inside of the swingarm is probably really corroded. And if you get the bolt freed up and try and wind it out the regular way you are going to screw up the threads in the swingarm. And a heli coil adventure will be in your future.

At this point I'm not going to try and tell you about anti sieze. But, I will tell you a good way to help keep moisture out of the 01 and later swingarms. Drill a very small hole on the bottom of the swing arm down at the adjuster end, but, ahead of the solid section there. I have done that to both my 01 and 04 bikes and have eliminated the corrosion problem inside the swingarm.

You should be able to get the bolt freed up, so be patient.

Hope this helps,

This thread is very timely. I recently picked up an 05 FE550e and have exactly the same problem. Obviously, the previous owner never heard of anti-seize. I'm going to try some gentle heat via oxy torch to see if that works.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all tha advise, the adjuster will move about 1/8 of an inch then solid as though it is tight up against a lock nut the same in either direction, and yes I have released the locking nut.
I will try the oil DaleEo and see how it fares failing that it's the hot spanner as we call it and failing that I think it will be a drilling job. I have an adjuster in the mail to me just incase the later is required.

Cheers all

Saprks.

My bike is going into the shop tomorrow to fix the adjustors. I don't have a gas axe, so I can't do it myself. I'll report back on the path taken to fix it.

i had the same problem on the 04 blackberg. mine has a plastic plug in the side of the swingarm toward the front. i pulled the plug and put about 2-3 ozs of wd-40 in the swingarm. if yours doesn't have the plug, drill a small hole somewhere in the middle big enough to squirt in some oil. i put it on a stand and pulled the axle partially out (my problem bolt was the left side) so i could get to the 10mm bolthead. using a sixpoiint box end wrench and a 12" piece of pipe that fit over the wrench as a cheater, i worked the bolt back and forth (loosen then back then loosen, etc) about an 1/8 turn at a time until i finally got it out. ( took better part of 30 minutes) i ran an 8mmx1.25 tap into the hole for good measure and cleaned up the galled threads on the bolt.. voila good as new (with some neverseize on it this time) :)

Chain adjustors repaired.

Chain sit adjustor eventually came out after spraying with penetrating oil for a few days, the removing rear wheel. After a fair bit of left 1/8th turn. right /8th turn, it eventually loosened up and was extracted whole. No such luck on the other side. Gentle heating with the oxy torch didn't help much. We were reluctant to try too much heat in case we ended up with a puddle of alloy instead of a swingarm.

So we snapped the bolt off, drilled it out and retaped the threads on both sides. Replaced with new bolts coated in anti-seize.

Should be good for yonks now.

Finally got it out , with out no drilling!! plenty of threatening words and reacting the famous John Clease sketch it finally came out.
I removed the rear wheel lifted the front end so when I filled the rear of the swing arm with WD40 it penetrated into the adjuster bolt. Thanks again for all the tips.

Regards

Sparks.
