Hello All,

I've recently bought a 20 hour old '05 FE450E, but my first chance to ride it will probably be in a 4 hour hare'n'hounds in 2 weeks. In preparation, I'm going over the bike to make sure all's o.k.

Now for the first of my stupid questions....

How do I get the FCR carb out to check the jetting???

I'm used to 2 strokes which require about 1 minute with a screwdriver, but can't work out which way is best to remove this one...please advise!!

Thanks.

Hey Martyn,
It's a wrestling match for sure. I believe last time I removed the starter first. 2 easily excessable bolts and it slides right out. The battery lead may be long enough to let the starter swing away.

don't know about later than my '02 but

undo the boot and remove
undo the carb and pull clear
pull out and leave laying against side of engine and work from there.

you can pull the throttle cables and gain about 3" which will help. i ride without the throttle cover BTW.

You should be able to make most jetting changes by just rotating the carb, i.e. shouldn't require complete removal.

yes but to get a screwdriver into the PJ is so difficult that if you don't hit the slot first time you will turn the screw driver and wipe the PJ numbers off!

On a 650 you may be able to just twist the carb, but the 450 needs more effort.

Loosen all 3 clamps, especially the motor side, then pull the carb back into the elbow and work the connector boot out. If you push the carb into back far enough, you won't damage the clamps. From here you can then rotate the body to get at the needle. You can change the main and the pilot throught the drain plug.

There is no need to remove the starter.

hope this helps

Thanks for the replies. I'll have another go tonight.

The problem seems to be that the top of the carb is a very tight fit with the cable housing on one side and the Throttle Position Sensor on the other.

So far I have already removed the shock, battery holder and the air boot and still couldn't get it out.

I haven't taken off the intake side boot yet and didn't realise how easy the starter comes off so I'll try that.

Cheers.

the main yes but unless you have a new supa-dupa carb you can't do the pilot this way...

Yes, the new carbs allow access to the pilot through the opening. It is sooo nice, as removing the float bowl is very awkward, having to work around the vent lines.

After removing the intake boot aswell, the carb came out easily..doh!

It's easy when you know how - thanks for advice.

I've got an OBDVR needle in the middle (4th) clip, a 40 pilot and a 178 main. Apart from the clip position it seems to be standard 'non-green' jetting. I think I'll just put the clip in the 6th from top and try that.

Then I'll check the valve clearance...
