I never thought i would ask this question, this whole rebuild is really kicking my *** lol...

Reusing the camchain, it is the old dark link regina that i believe i read were really good, during dissassembly the tensioner still had plently of clicks left. I marred up one tooth on the camchain crank sproket so i replaced it with one from a 1997 fe400, same number of teeth and measures identical, also replaced the camshaft sproket with a different aluminum one that came with the cam and was in better condition than mine, which also measured the same. i tried removing the camchain slide for a little extra clearance and verified the cam was fully seated in the head, even tried slightly prying the chain onto cam sproket with little pry bar. also tried flipping the chain since i was out of ideas....

originally there was no base gasket, i got one with my gasket kit and used it, was this a bad idea?

Last time i fitted the camchain i dont recall having a problem, i did it while the bike was in the frame...

Sorry what bike is this a 501??

Just a stupid question, how much have you dissasembled did you only pull the head off. reason I'm asking is to see how the chain is sitting on the crank sprocket. I know on my 650 the chain has enough room to fall off the teeth at the bottom and not sit in it's proper location.

its a 1997 fe600, sorry i didnt wright it since its in my signature..

it has been completely gone through, all engine and gearbox bearings and seals, connecting rod/crank true, high compression weisco piston, the camshaft is a '55' cam from the motocross version 501, updated decomp and sledge.

in the pictures there is no slack on the bottom crank gear and i have the tensioner slide removed to get a little more.

although neither of the sprokets are the originals they are the same, headgasket is factory thinkness, liner is seated in lower half properly with a base gasket installed, cam and bearings seated in head, the only thing i can think different is the base gasket, i just cant beleieve thats enough to cuase the camchain to not fit but i dont understand what else would have changed that crank-to-cam length? the chain did not have any slack really to speak of and is why i didnt replace it...

Well my baby boy will go to bed 2 hours from now then i can have shome shop time....if i still havent heard anything i guess ill pull the jug off enough to yank that gasket out and see what happens, just dont know what else it could be as that was really all thats different that i can think of....the more i think about it the more i think the gasket is causing the problem, i think the chain is less than half a link off or probably just about as much of the gasket thickness doubled (you would have to double it since the chain passes that gasket twice)

I work on a lot of vehicles and repairing mechanical things and paid by flat rate hours/time as my job and must be efficient to make it, oddly enough it seems if something is going to give me troubles it will be the husberg, i should know by now that however long i 'think' the job will take and mulitply that number by 2-3 to get the actual time it would take  pitty the guys who work on this stuff for a living-you have more patience than i !!! :bounce3:

well here goes plan b, ill post back the results, hopefully they will be good....

removed base gasket and refit everything and chains slipped right in, i guess moral of the story is if you dont have a base gasket originally dont add one unless you plan on doing something with the camchain too, who woulda thought

engine is built and closed...will put it in the frame tomorrow night but will have to wait for wednesday to ride

you beat me too it. no base gasket.

I have yet to work on the husaberg that needs it.

Good job on getting that engine rebuilt in such a short time. A couple months is pretty quick IMO.

yea it was my first motorcycle engine too....i have rebuilt planty of other things, transmissions, car engines, small engines, ring and pinion differential asssemblies.....this thing by far was the most challenging in my opinion, maybe its just my shop not equipt for things this small, my special tools are more geared for light duty atuo repair.......

........i still gotta put the engine in the bike and run it so assuming all is good then ill accept your good job.....lol...im not calling it done till the fat lady sings or something bad will happen :D

Got the engine installed but the fat lady would not sing, i think her throught was kinda dry, kicked it 10 times no go, hit the e-start and rolled it a bunch of times with no go.....pulled the plug to check the obvious, with all that kicking and cranking the plug is dry as a bone......has a nice spark though, lol, if it isnt one thing its another, gonna pull the carb back out tonight and see what has gotten crudded up in the last two months and hopefully find the problem and get it running......

and yes i did fill it with gas and i did turn the petckock on, beleive me i triple checked :? liekly just didnt get all the fuel out of the carb before it got set on the bench and tarnished something up, at least hopfully thats it.....

But you sold me one for my 600-98 rebuilt ?? So I probably will not use it

Dont use it if you dont already have one!!! unless of course you like to take stuff back apart after assembly :D i am no sure why they come in the kit either, there should be a note in there to not use it, i had assumed it came with one and the origninal owner didnt reinsall it when he had it apart (i know he had it apart before)

i can say you can get it back apart without fully pulling the head off, leave the three small bolts in and remove the four head stud nuts, slide up the jug and cut out the gasket and install the sealer, its definatly not as fun to do it this way though :D
