Hello All,
I think I narrowed the noise down in my 97 FE501 to the cam chain slappping the case at idle. Can anyone tell me if the older Berg's had problems with the tensioners like I've read so much of on the newer ones? Should I take it apart and check to see if it's on the last notch?

Also, I pulled the (3 bolt) cover off the right side of the engine that covers the starter drive gears. I removed the gear in there and found that the inner small gear teeth are worn pretty badly. Is this common? Can I get the gear for a reasonable price or should I leave it out and kick start it all the time?

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick,

Regarding pre 01 engines:
The cam chain tension unit itself has not proven to be a problem, however, due to manufacturing tolerances some engine builds did allow the cam chain to come into contact with the cylinder and / or head. Such contact will yield a hefty supply of Aluminum sparkles during an oil change.

It has been my experience that the starter cluster gear most often outlives that of the sprague clutch. A plug is available via Husaberg to conveniently block off the starter motor port in the event you should decide to remove the "E"start system.

Hope this helps.
Kind Regards,
Dale

Hi Dale,
Thanks for the reply. I'm not really worried about removing the starter itself, just that I was wconcerned that gear may come apart and ruin my engine. I have the gear out now with the cover back on, that shouldn't cause a problem, right?

As for the cam chain, what do you recommend I do with it? Should it be replaced or is there a way to tighten it up a bit? The bike makes a pretty loud tick noise, only at idle (when I assume there is the most chance of the chain to slap around) and I'd like to get rid of it. I haven't changed the oil yet since I did it right before the noise started and I really haven't ridden it since it started making noise. Can I assume it's a huge pain in the *** to change the chain? Or can I slip it in and out without yanking the motor?

Thanks again,
Nick

Hi Nick,
No troubles with removing the reduction gear.

The cam chain makes very little noise even while sawing its way through the engine unless of course your proves to be the exception to the rule and does indeed have a faulty tension unit.

Simply set your valve lash to zero, rotate the engine to TDC overlap and with the ignition cover removed rotate the flywheel for and aft noting any slack and / or noise.

Hope this helps.
Kind Regards,
Dale
