Hey Guys,

I will pick up my 98 Husaberg FE501E in just over a week. The seller had told me that a gear in the gearbox had gone south a while back. While having the trans fixed he said the engine was freshened-up. I am not sure what was done. I am also not sure if any updates were done or which updates would be applicable. The seller also said he has between 50-60 hours of scenic trail riding on the bike since the work was done. I am not sure when the last valve adjustment was done, but the bike started up quickly with the electric starter then after being shut off for a few minutes, it restarted with one kick from the kick-starter.
After reading over some of the maintenance threads, I feel it would probably be a good idea to check out a few things before taking the bike out. What would you guys suggest I look into on the bike? Also, how can you tell if updates were done? I don't think the seller has a service manual with the bike, is there anywhere online that I can view a valve adjustment proceedure?

thanks in advance,
Mark Piechowski

Look under downloads you should be able to find what you need there also checkout the FAQ on this site also.Hope this helps.

Probably change the oil, check the valves, take off the flywheel cover & check it's dry & usual general maintenance is all that is required for now. You might also want to make sure the engine breater is not connected to the airbox if you plan on upside-downing it.

Json (schwim) has a copy of the '97-98 owner's manual. If you lean on him he might put it in the downloads area, else PM me with an address & I'll email it direct to you. The closest workshop manual I can find around is the '99, but it is good enough for most things. The parts manual is at http://www.husaberg.se/download/former.asp

From what I can tell, just about all of the updates people refer to are to bring the 2001s & '02s up to '03 and beyond specs. I think the older series like ours was fairly well sorted by '98 and I don't know of any necessary updates.

re: manual

Ask the seller if he replaced the connecting rod bearing and bushing when he freshened up the engine.

The original cam gear is aluminum and should be replaced with the new steel one if it hasn't already been changed. This is a cause of metal flakes in the oil of many older bikes. A new gear and timing chain would run about $120 or so but could save you from a lot of trouble in the future. You can take the rocker cover off and tell by looking at the cam gear whether it's the aluminum or steel one. The aluminum one will have wear marks on the teeth where the chain runs and the plate of the gear is the same thickness as the teeth and solid without any holes. The steel gear will have a couple holes milled in it to keep the weight down and the plate is not as thick as the teeth. Also you may want to check the rocker arm rollers for wear.

When I bought my '99 FE400 used, these were the first things I had to replace. After only 3 or 4 rides and I had to replace this stuff. The previous owner had overtightened the valves to cover up the top end chatter from the rocker arm rollers.
