I am about to buy my first berg and there are two dealers that I can pick from.
One (dealer 1) has a factory computer that he can plug in to your bike and change the settings, I'm guessing timing and fuel etc but his price is a bit more than the other guy.
The other (dealer 2) justs sells them as they came from the factory, he does not have this computer to reprogram the ecu.
At the moment when you buy a run out model you get a new set of wheels and a switch that gives you 3 modes, I guess it just alters the fuel and timing a bit for different riding conditions.
Any what I am asking is are they sweet from the factory or do they need to be tuned with this computer like dealer one is telling me?
Some help here would be very appreciated thanks.

I have a 2010 fx-450 ,just bought it and is it very good right out of the box,There are rebates on the 2010's so get a great price before you buy. Where do you live?

Some help you will rceive, first thing, a location in your signature will tell us some more info.

If it were me, i would buy from the dealer with the computer for programing. The other dealer as you say just sells them, and as such would probably have little information or knowledge of how to look after them. If you do have an issue, you have to ask, what quality the work would be if he does not have the most imortant tool availible for tuning this bike.

My suggestion would be to get it from the 1st dealer with the computer. If he has taken the time and money to get the computer to assist tuning, then he will take the time to look after your bike.

I'd agree with squizz, dealer 1 sounds like the better option as at least you know he's made the investment to buy the programming tool, which probably means that you're more likely to find people there who are better able to support the bike if you have a problem or want advice on upgrades etc. You should also be able to get a feel for that by talking to both dealers and asking a few general questions to see if you get sensible answers.

I have the 2010 FE rather than the FX, but the engine's very similar if not identical between the two and it's the best engine I've ever ridden. They do come out with updated maps from time to time to improve the engine performance and fix minor problems, so it may be that dealer 1 is saying the bike he has in stock has an old map on it and he's going to upgrade it to the latest map before you buy, which you would want doing if there was a newer map. I don't know for sure, especially not about the FX, but I think the map that originally came on the 2010's was pretty good anyway and better than that on the 2009s (so most owners of '09s have probably upgraded to the newer map by now). If he's actually talking instead about making changes to the standard mappings, you might want to do that but I don't know how many people actually do as the engine's just so sweet to start with.

The 3-position mapping switch selects one of three different maps in the ECU to vary how aggressive the power delivery is. The connection for it is built in so you'd get that anyway, but the switch itself is normally an optional extra at additional cost (not a huge amount). Worth having as it does make some difference so you can soften the power if you're riding in really tricky conditions.

Thanks for all the great info. Sorry I do need to
up date my info as only joined the other day.
The bike I'm looking at is the FE570.
I live in the south island of New Zealand.
It seems that the new 2011 model will not get
to us till around dec.
The run out 2010 sounds like a good deal with the
extra wheels to me.
Off to talk to the two dealers tomorrow to see what sort of
deal I can get. Time to retire my old cr500.

Before you buy an old-stock model, you should know what the differences are and then decide if it's worth the wait and extra cash.

2011 FE570s have:

  • Closed cartridge forks[/*:m:xb1d5np4]
  • Steering head reinforced[/*:m:xb1d5np4]
  • Neken bars[/*:m:xb1d5np4]
  • Revised valve spring retainers[/*:m:xb1d5np4]
  • Revised inlet manifold[/*:m:xb1d5np4]
  • Revised auto decompressor[/*:m:xb1d5np4]
  • Revised graphics[/*:m:xb1d5np4]

The forks appear to be a genuine upgrade. I assume that the new bars are cheaper (they have the same bend as the Maguras from last year). The graphics is just bling/style. But why they other bits? Were there problems?

I would go with the dealer with the computer as that is an indication that he is a bit more dedicated to servicing the brand. Generally the 570s have not needed tweaking. Some of the 390s have. Also, if the bike does need tuning in that sense then it is better to have a dealer that has the tools and the know how.

The map switch is nice if you want to ride off-road; being able to select power delivery is good there. I select the softest setting for riding trails then select the most aggressive power setting for the pavement to and from the trails. That is worth the $50 for the switch. You can make your own if you wish.
