This happened today on my mates KTM 525 2003.
Am assuming the bolts came loose.
He is lucky to have not fallen off given that it broke off and was wedged in swingarm and wheel. He was at fullnoise 4th gear when it occured.
Any way thought you all might like a look and have some stories to tell.

What hub should he but to replace it etc?

Officially this is part # 5481001004496 but I would just hit eBay and look for a parted out wheel, that way no spoke to mount and either resell the rim with the spokes or keep as spare.

But here goes the "KTM has better hardware than the Japs" argument.

Wait... Isn't it the same on our bikes?

Pick up one of these bad boys right here, "Talon hubs" and then have it laced and slap his excel rim on with it and he will be set. The Talon will probably be about the same or maybe a little more than OEM hub but will be lighter, stronger, and much nicer to look at. Just a suggestion.

Regards,

When you choose the "other" option you are charged $40 bucks but can have the hub anodized blue, red, green, or any other color which they offer. Some blue hubs on a Berg would be sweet!

"Custom anodizing"

Regards,

It would make the bike look so bl... bl... argh... not... use... that... word...

But what can cause the sprocket to shred off the hub like that? A crack that was there before?

Mr. Lefrog:
Congratulations!!!!

The self control you have demonstrated by not using the "B" word is commendable and is not going unnoticed.

We are however still keeping an eye on you for your own good of course. Do refer back to the Additional TOS located here should you find yourself having a weak moment.

Keep up the good work,

The Management

That picture is very common, if you don't keep your sprocket bolts tight and use a removeable locktite. On the 2000 to 2002 hubs the spokes would break on the chain side, if your chain tension was too tight.

I've seen this before on a 03 KTM 525SX. Yes, you do have to keep your sproket bolts tight but that's not the big reason. Chain tension is. You have to check it with the front and rear sproket in line with the swingarm pivot bolt to set the chain tension. Even then, it's best to run it a little on the loose side.

I've seen this before now a few times with a certain aftermarket sprocket...who manufactured that sprocket? I cant tell from the angle. Although I think the brand I am thinking about is a stainless steel version...

Thanks for all the info guys. I will make sure my mate reads this thread.

After inspecting swingarm (inside near wheel) there are no marks in it where loose bolts would have wore it away. Another mate had his come loose an wore groove in swing arm there is nothinng like that so we are thinking hub failure what do you guys think.

That is what I would think also. Is there any way to check or see any tiny cracks in the hub? Seems to me that it would take a lot of force to cause something like that.

Hey Faktor if he is in Mildura with you take the hub and sproket down to the airport and get the aircraft engineers to have a look at it and do a dye test on it, not sure if there are still eastern airlines guys there but they were all nice guys. you can also send it off to the ATSB (transport crash guys) and get the to look at it. once they come up with an answer send the whole lot off to KTM and I bet you you will get sent a new one from the factory. Especially if it is off a well maintenained road registered none of the factories like that sort of stuff happening.(IE ATSB knowing about a fault)

regards
Justin

As a former KTM owner (yeah, I know...) I occasionally get notices from Ohio telling me - "RUN, DO NOT WALK to your nearest KTM dealer and get such and such replaced".

I just received such a notice for a 2003 LC4 that I owned, a recall for the FRONT hub.

Those damn Austrians :)

ok great guys thanks for all the input I will see what he wants to do and keep you all posted etc.
