Hey all,
Is it a problem bringing a bike into the US from Canada that is not going to be a road bike? What do I need to get it over the boarder?
Thanks!

I don't know about riding across a boarder - he/she might object to having a bike rode across them.

Seriously, if you are bringing the bike into the USA for riding, off-road or road, then I don't think there is much to do. I don't think it is any different than any other vehicle. You might be asked if you are going to sell it and they might require you to bring it back to Canada. Not sure. Personally I have always gone the other way - into Canada and back - on a street bike, with no problems or questions about the bike.

If you are wanting to register/license it here for the street, then if it was made after about 1982 you will probably need it to have an EPA/FMVSS cert/sticker for some states - others won't care. If you are trying to sell it, then there are other issues.

That's funny! Being a fellow boarder, I don't think they would mind......

I am thinking of buying a Montesa 4rt trials bike of rather new vintage. They stopped importing them into the US after 06, but they continued importing into Canada until 09. I don't think there are 10's around at all. I am hoping to find one and bring it down. I would be driving it across the border......

Oh, so you would be importing it, but not plating it.

You would need to declare it and pay duty on it then.

Here is a TT thread where this was discussed:

You probably need to ask US Customs.
