On saturday i bought my first Berg, an 03 FE400 model. What a weapon!
I have a bit of technical question but i'm not sure which forum to put it in so I'll put it here if thats ok.
I used it all weekend and then washed it off using a pressure washer on low and avoiding all the usual danger areas, electrics, bearings etc. When i had finished i removed the cover to the stator , squirted it with WD40 and wiped it out with a clean, dry rag. I then repalced the cover. I didn't want to leave the bike wet so I tried to fire it up to get it warm and dry it off. I was really difficult to start and when i did get it running, it would only idle with the choke on full. I realise now it would have been more sensible removing the cover to the stator after i had dried the bike off, but too late now.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing the bike not to idle without the choke on? I'm a bit worried about it having just bought it.
Thanks

IMHO using a pressure washer is inadvisable.
A few parts of the Berg are some kind of hydrophobic...

Drying the ignition cover after every wash is absolutely
recommended unless you have done some mods concerning
water inleakage. There are members here at UHE who can
help with this topic.

Concerning idle speed there is a good chance of
ingress of moisture into the carburetor. Just remove
and dismantle it for accurate cleaning.

Hope this helps,

please download the 'owners doc' at the base of this post by me. in it you'll find loads of tips to help you.

IMHO, you have water in the air filter and that then drops into the air boot and blocks the air bleed on the carb.

take the air filter off and pop some paper towel down there after every wash and before you try to start it. flick it out with a long screwdriver.

if you don't want to clean out the carb, take it for a run and it will evaporate/clear the water.

please put where you're from under your avator so we can help with costs and contacts etc.

this should help ya :D :D

regards

Taffy

I think Taffy is on the mark about water in the carb boot. My first wash left about 1/2" water in the damn thing and of courst it then filled up the bowl and I wasn't smart enough or ashamed too much to ask here and kicked for two days and then took the carb apart. You are not alone my brother!

Thanks for that. I'll whip the carb apart and give it a good blow out.
I'm from Salisbury Plain in Wilsthire by the way.

It sounds familiar to me because thats what I try and eat for breakfast at least three days a week :D

I checked my ignition cover after last ride, (in hard rain), & wash when I got home, didn't see any moisture. Are the '05s sealed better or was I just lucky?
Thanks

The 04's and 05's are sealed great. Every time I wash & check the ignition for moisture I have not found any! The 01 to 03's on the other hand are the worst. You must pull the cover off after every wash or else.

When washing water runs right down the frame backbone and into the filter. You can build up a bit of a dam with silicone sealer or just clean the filter after every wash which is what I do. As mentioned earlier in the thread at that time wipe the water out of the boot along with any oil until you do a breather mod.

And the guys at work thought you had an affliction for glazed doughnuts 3 days a week. :D Pull the plug cap, and the recess in the head may be inflicted with water as well. First ride it will boil, short the plug, and will leave you as frustrated as a hairlip ordering worchestershier sauce. Don't forget to adjust the valves as well.
