I just picked up another 01. I bought it for parts, it is a fc550 with a sm setup ktm clamps and an fcr carb. Figured to sell everything and keep the motor for a spare. Now I'm having second thoughts. The ser. Number is 000001. The first one off the line for 01. What should I do? Part it or re do it? That is after the wife kills me.

RE DO IT!! Make it orginal then sell it to a museum or a colector ;)

I stripped off the s/m stuff, the ratty plastics, painted tank and uncovered seat. Put on some spare stuff I had lying around. And.....

i think OLDMAN is saying it looks pretty cool in black, with silver emboss, rather than the usual cast iron/silver colour... :) i agree!

Ok, yes, I agree. A previous owner also painted the frame black. I'm debating looking for an 01 550 engine and putting it back to original. In the meantime it is going to get ridden.

Does an 01 and an 04 look the same ? Looks identical to my 04 ...

Yes they do. Up to 2005. KTM took over and the 04 mod started taking on kato electics, about 50/50, before the 05 model was full kato electrics.

First test ride yesterday. Sold all the track stuff and bling off the bike. Motor sounds very good, pulls like a train. The suspension is way too stiff (.84 spring on the back and forks too stiff) for my liking (Offroad). The bike feels very light and smaller without all the electric start kit, switch gear and electrics that are on my fe.
