Hi guys,

I have an '04 FS650E that I ride pretty much every day to work and back. Had it for about 2 years with minimal problems, change the oil every 500kms and check valve clearances every few times, never been loose.
So, about 12 months ago I bent a valve and had to get it replaced, not a very cheap exercise.
I was coming home last saturday night and all of a sudden the bike lost all its power, I had to rev very high to keep it going as I was about 100m from home. As soon as I pulled into the driveway the bike stalled and won't start.
This seems very similar to what happened last time, am I right in assuming it is another valve gone? The kick start still feels pretty hard, although I could push by hand (difficult, but possible). Is there a chance there could be an issue with the decomp lever? I don't ever use it though, as I always use the e-start. I am really just looking for other options as I dont really want to fork out hundreds of dollars on a valve change...

If it is a valve, does a valve lasting ~3500km of road use seem unusual, or just the price of having a berg?
BTW, all work on the bike is done by the berg dealer in town, not by me (except oil changes).

Any ideas appreciated.
Cheers,
Luke

hey there lad,
somethings got to be wrong to bend a valve, bergs just don't bend valves after so many hours.
saying that the std intakes are soft & havent got a long life span.if you plan on keeping the bike for any length of time, replace the intakes with stainless steel like i did.have a look in my gallery.i think taffys getting a heap made up.
rip the tappet cover off & have a look at the decomp & rockers, just to make sure nothings riding, should be something simple.

i don't think the 35mm inlets are THGAT bad but i don't know anyone doing your high mileage luke?

would beg you to consider my dual valve spring kit. seated pressure on the valve is reduced from 100LB to 60LB. valve train life would be forever compared to what you have. change the cam chain while you are there to an IWIS (guess who sells them!) they just don't show any wear whatsoever.

other than that your model should run forever.

regarding the valves, well i have about 12 inlets and 8 oversize exhausts (32mm) coming. no price as yet but if you do the DVSK you won't need special valves i'm 100% certain.

Taffy whats a DVSK?

hey taffy any idea if the valves are different or different part numbers ,between the old fe600 35mm intakes & the fe650 35mm intakes.i'm thinking there must me,cause me mates fe600 only done about 25 hrs from when he put new genuine intakes & they were stuffed.they weren't leaking , just feathered out to a razor edge on the combustion face & tuliped where it seats.they looked alright till you pulled them out.
so the 35mm fe650 valves last alright hey?

yes mate. i've never had one tulip. but then also, no seat is as narrow as the 37s. almost dangerously thin at 1mm. racing stuff on a roadbike. not quite sure why the 600 got through them. they only use the one part number now and you can't even get the 34mm inlets. they also shortened them so your tappet screws are nearly all the way through....

As for reliability, I bought my bike with 5000kms on it, I have since put another 7500km on it. I had a cracked valve spring which then bent a valve at about 9000kms, and now it seems the same thing has happened at 12500. From what I can gather, this isnt too bad considering they are close to a race bike which the designers probably expected to be pulled down and rebuilt much before 12,500KMs!
I like to think I ride pretty hard, but still on the road in 60 and 80 km/h zones, so nothing really compared to racing, and only about 1000kms of it on the dirt. These 2 valve issues are the only problems i have had in all that riding, so cant complain. I got the ***** the other night when it failed and had a quick look on the web at wgat else is available and there is just no other bike I would have for the money (or even for more money!).

Anyway, i will pull the top off tonight and see what actually broke, and if it was a spring again then i will go for the double spring version. Taffy, you say they are OEM, so might try and get some locally, otherwise I will just order them from you. Might be just as easy to get you to send some out straight away as anything from my local dealer seems to take a week minimum so surely they are just ordereing from OS anyway.

i sometimes struggle too. i find everyone in the trade despite liking my money gives poor service and mostly lie. so i can be a bit slow too.

now then, the DVSK aren't OEM they are a secret hot ticket of mine. i have a new load coming in on friday/saturday this week.
