My 2006 FE650E has got about 12 hours on it. I just did oil change #3. The brand new oil in the site glass looks black and crappy. WTF? I am not used to dirty oil and should I ber worried about something? I am very tempted to drop the new oil and have a look at the magnet again...

Probably just alittle clutch residue. The sight glass is in the clutch cover. The old oil looked OK right?

yes everything was normal with the old oil, just darker than I am used to on my other bikes, but the magnet and the screen were all within standards from what I have seen.

Oil that doesn't get black is something to worry about. Oil that stays pretty is leaving gunk in the engine. Oil that discolors is carrying that gunk so that its removed from the engine when the oil is drained.

You worry about the magnet, but metal shavings will not turn an oil dark. Clutch residue will. Combustion blow-by will turn the oil dark. Perhaps your rings are not fully seated? Wouldn't really expect them to be at their prime yet after only 12 hours.

Hey maDDtraPPer,

did you run the bike in or buy it with 12hrs after a rebuild ? Only ask to see if you have noticed any difference in performance when the oil started to get blacker, quicker. If you've been for a ride where you have been fanning the clutch heaps it will go black, like n4hhe said. I change my oil as soon as practical after it goes black, average 5 hrs. Cheap insurance really compared to a rebuild, especially if it goes big.

The shop broke the bike in and did the first servicing for me. I am just not used to dark oil. I change the oil on my Ninja every 3000 kms and the KTM the same and it looks basically as good as the day it went in there. The only riding the bike has done is around town here stop and go. I am going to drop the oil anyways. Oil is cheap in comparison...
