Hi.
I just got my newly bought FC550/4 from service. I took it for a little spin, and was suprised how fast it was running, even with no throttle, on 1'rst gear. I discovered that my bike has 38 teeth on the rear sprocket and 16 on the front sprocket. Thats for high speed I think. I know that this is to fast for my use. I'm going to not only drive in motocross tracks, but maybe have some fun in the woods as well. I have a spare rear sprocket with 48 teeth, but I'm not convinced that thats the right thing to put on, and that it might be better to go down on the front sprocket.
What sprocket combo do you think will be the best for more enduro-like driving?

with a 4-speed yu're going to have to compromise.

suggest that you put that 48T on. it'll need at least 4 links in the chain. these run 116 links BTW?

then with 48 on the rear you can decide between stalling in first and when you keep begging for another gear!

do the rest of your gearing just on the front so 16 becomes 15 becomes 14 OK?

regards

Taffy

Ok, I'll try that. Thanks!
It looks like the 16T is as big as it can be on the front sprocket.
It's quite narrow and I dont think one more tooth would fit, but thats not the issue for me as I want to slow the bike down. So maybe it would be a good idea to go down a couple of tooth on it. I'll check what's most expencive; a new front sprocket or a new chain.
How many teeth can one single tooth on the front sprocket be compared to, on the back sprocket, do you think? Or can't that be comparable, and give quite different gearing(ratio?)?
I off course know that a 6 gear would have been more perfect for the woods, but I basically don't need the top speed, at least in the beginning. I am a bit conserned the engine will overrun, though, but I think I just have to listen to it and shift gear more often?
(Sorry, I'm kinda thinking loud, and check if soembody want to correct my thoughts....;)..)

16/38 is good only for motard. I do suggest you to buy a new chain and 14,15 for the front and try them on, decide which one is better for you. the rear wheel will not be equally far even if you change the number of links (+-2pcs) for 14 teeth compared to 15 teeth. this makes the bike longer (more stable in fast straight forward) or shorter, if the wheel is more in front (more capable to turn around a tree). I pesonally like it shorter (this may be not ideal for u and your bike). to decide which front sprocket is better, choose that one which will make you hesitate if you need the first gear or not. if the setup makes you 100% sure the first gear is unnecessary, put the bigger sprocket on in front. I know a guy, who likes to ride with 13/50 on a FE501 and FE550 (currently 300 2-stroke). his rear wheel drifts in every turn and allways when he touches the throttle. his tire consumption is abnormal and the bike is barely rideable if it doesnt have absolutely new tire. FC550 is an insanely strong bike, thus I guess the 15 will be better.

Thanks for info, guys. I appreciate to get tips from experienced riders and Husaberg owners. So I don't have to re-invent the wheel.

16/38 was what my FS550 (notice the S) had from stock. Now it's on 14/40. Way better without loosing that much speed, which I don't really need anyway. For woods you might want something shorter, 16/38 sounds definitively too long.

Highflyer

you simply divide the front teeth into the rear so

13 x 52 is the same gearing as 14 x 56 because it is a ration of 1 to 4. simple?

so get the bigger chain, stop phuqin about, fit the 48t rear, get a 14t ready and crack on!

I reckon a 14t x 48t would be fine and a 15 x 48 is too tall.

Thanks again!
Next question:

Since parts, like sprockets, for the 2001 is more and more rare to find.
Does sprockets for other models fit?

I find a lot of sprockets on the net, but it's mostly for newer models.
Does anybody with experience have a quick-guide for interchangeability?
Pleeease...:D

Ktm rear sprockets fit. Husqvarna 250 2t front sprockets from about 2000 on fit. Also berg sprockets up to 08 fit.

Now....my experiences, for what it's worth:
I used 13T frontsprocket, and a 48T rear, for a while in the woods. Trialing and playing around. But that is not a comfortable combo. The 4 gear FC550 become raw and stumpy to ride. On 1'st gear, when you try to do some technical driving in very slow speed, the engine brakes so much that you almost fall over the bar. It became very sensetive on the throttle at that speed. I think it's better to use the clutch in such riding, and to have a faster gearing. Top speed when riding trought the forrests with a friend, was also to slow to be comfortable. I had to hold back, for my engine not to go on to high rev when we were cruising. He rides a Husky TC450. Of course he has 5 gear, and will have much more in both ends.
Now I have changed my backsprocket to 38T, and a first try, that felt much better for my power. With 13/48 it was damned fast and strong, but it started to spin on dry tamback on full throttle, on 2 and 3 gear. But you have a hurry to put in new gear, and suddely you wish for more gears.

Just my learning by doing. But I thought; since I asked, someone might want to hear what I found out. ;)
