I am back from a 2 hour ride on tight and gnarly trails and I had a couple difficulties in the slower stuff finding the right gear.

Already have written Santa to ask him for a Rekluse, which should help with the stalling (I may have stalled 4 times, always at the best moment, of course).

Currently running 48/14 on the 501, and although it does fine when I charge through, sometimes charging is now well advised and that's when I get into difficulties.

It seems that as soon as I get into 3rd, I need to get back into 2nd, until I pick up speed and the engine is overrevving, I get into 3rd, and again I feel that I am not in the right gear. On and on and on.

Has anybody tried 13 in the front? Total bike + rider = 500 lbs.

Thanks for the advice.

Oh yeah, to make it even harder, the tip of my camelpack broke off and all my water fell on the trail at the beginning of the ride, I had to beg my buddy for a few sips :roll:

He also thinks I should disconnect the brain and just charge through everything.

Huh that will be very tall. Does this mean I should then use the 3rd instead of the 2nd?

Brian, I went up on Indiana thru Paintball, zero fall, what a change hey?

Pick up the pace so you can pull third more of the time. :D Seriously, a 13 on the front is going to be way too short -geared, and will just make you shift more.

I run a 13X48 on my 501. In some cases it is to low like said above but you can always up shift. Be aware of over reving in the lower gears but other than that if you like to poke along and not scare yourself to often :D then try it. That is the gearing I used up at the Hatfield McCoy last year and it worked very well.
Good luck

One of my riding buddies has 14/48 on his fe501
The last ride I destroyed a rear tyre, so I borrowed his rear wheel & tyre.
He has been running around with my rear wheel in his bike.
Yes i made him change the destroyed tyre first.
He loves my gearing 50 tooth rear sprocket.
making it a 14/50

Stock: 48/15 => 3.2

Me: 48/14 => 3.43

Your buddy: 50/14 => 3.57

I guess it could be tried but I don't see myself investing in a 50T rear sprocket (unless I find one for cheap on eBay).

I had a few prob with a worn engine on my "99 501 , this sounds odd but i went 15/50 and i found it a 'flexible' sprocketing especially in more technical conditions. I let a few none Husaberg owners take my bike for a spin and they all loved my "rideable" machine! But it will mean you investing in a 50T rear sprocket...I've chewed a couple...in fact i got one that is worn but if you want to pay the postage i will send it to you , once i fit my new one!
