From what I recall, not very much is written negativley about the 501. If it is an 03, you have the majority of the updates, the only downside, if you can call it that, is the fact that you have the SEM ignition, which is really no longer as big of an issue because we seem to have found a reliable source for rewinds (sparks, on this site), making them better than new. You also have the dellorto carb, which works fine in a proper state of tune. as long as you are rigourous with your maintenance, those bikes can be trouble free, at least as much as any other bike out there. with proper maintenance "unreliable" does not really apply to the 03 and up bikes. Are you using the 501 for motard use? or are you going to throw on some dirt gear and use it on the trails?
