Hi Guys, been a while since I last posted, I have had a 2002 fe470 for the last 18 months or so, got it running and starting nice and sweet (with much help from the Doc and this forum) and have had a lot of fun on it around the local green lanes. Any how, few weeks back noticed a nasty (well, more than usual) noise coming from the clutch side, now I have recently replaced the clutch bearings and basket so new it wouldn't be anything trivial..lol.
So finally got up the courage to pull the motor and strip it. Now like a prat I thought I new what it was ie the ballancer and bought some replacement bearings from Taffy(thanks). now guess what I find when I split the cases... All the bearings are shot! one of the mains has lost 2 balls! ffs!! The ironic part is the only bloody bearing that is any good is....you guessed it the fekin ballancer bearing grrrrrrrrrrr. Now at last to the point of this post, I am worried about removing and fitting all the bearings in the crank cases as it would be just my luck to break the cases trying (they are in there really good) Now would you recommend I get someone like DCR to supply and fit new bearings and if so any idea of costs involved or should I just stick em in the oven and whack em till they come out? is there a method to make the process easier?
I really love my Berg but with all my mates doing the "I told you so" thing I have got to decide if it is going to be economically viable to repair or should I break it and use the money I would have spent and buy something sensible (god forbid!)
Thanks for reading all the above and your thoughts and opinions are most welcome.

Mark.

hello mark

didn't know you were a member when you bought the bearings. if i'd known i'd have doubled the price! LOL!!!!

i have just done a bike that had had the inboard w/p shaft bearing frag and it was £1k

there is such a difference between regular maintenanvce and getting over a blow-up! regular maintenance means everything was still good but with an explosion you're looking to cover all the bases.

mid west are nearer you at melksham, swindon and gary grover at newbury.

good luck

heat em up yourself

Mate get in there and do it your self get the oven amping ,beer chilleddddd!!!! knock the bearings out and have a crack yourself the only way to learn have rebuilt engines myself since i was a kid i have put 50hrs on my 650 since my own rebuild and it is pumping hard use the book for torque settings and pieces you get stuck on take your time and save a stack of dollars.make sure you check big end if you are not going to change it,change gudgeon pin and bearing and the Jesus clips check your piston for spec better new though motoexotica cheap and rings check bore and rip into it.
side note i call them Jesus clips because have you ever had one of those buggers fly off on you (Jesus)

RE: heat em up yourself

i can't agree pitt. his enjoyed has gone south, did yours? or was it a freshen up?

things have got to be JUDGED as to whether they are good enough to use again. $1,000,000 questions abound. plus you only ever save on the labour and lose on the postage!

just my opinion.

regards

Taffy

RE: heat em up yourself

I looked into my bike when i heard a knock coming from up stairs i didnt wait until it went boom it would have been soon thoughIf what you mean by JUDGED to mean within spec i couldnt agree more.As you would know when you have to split a case down the centre its not a freshen up,who in there right mind would not do every bearing and seal they see in there as the engine is a full pull apart just to replace rings as for saving on postage why would i pay $550 for piston and rings when i can get them for $230 delivered to my door its cheaper to buy over seas and wait than get it here tomorrow 55 for intake valves pays to shop around
