I've recently bought one of Taffmeisters superduper batteries and superduper starter motors. Question is, how do I wire everything up.

Problem is, the stock wiring harness is long gone and I've made my own harness, this however is setup to run everything from the stator, so no wires for batteries.

I've studied the wiring diagrams but it's not clear to me where the battery get's it's charge from. Anyone care to explain this to a numbnut like myself :D

Easiest would be for me to make a separate wire loom wich just includes the battery, starter relay, starter button, so keep the lights, etc running of of the stator and only the starter off of the battery, but I can't figure out how to wire up the battery so it charges off of the stator.

Thanks.

So, I'm not sure which way you want to go here. Do you want to run lights and all accessories from the battery? Or do you want to run the lights separately from the battery?

Yep that's the idea, keep my current setyp where lights, ets are run directly of the stator

And a separate wiring loom for the battery, starter, starter relay, starter button, only problem is, I don't know how to wire it so that the battery will charge of the stator, is it just as simple as connecting the second yellow wire wich comes from the stator to the battery or is there more to it?

the way i did it was to buy a harness from somebody who's breaking one down.
you are going to need a starter relay, regulator/rectifier, starter mount bracket, starter button, grounding ring.
download the schematic in the '02 owners manual.

Seems like nobody can make any sense of my explanation

I've got all the parts except the wiring, I also know how to wire everything up so that the starter works, only thing I don't know is how to get the battery to charge off the stator, Can I connect the yellow wire from the stator directly to the battery or do I have to feed it off the regulator/rectifier?

Christof.

or do I have to feed it off the regulator/rectifier
yes, the yellow wire is ac voltage and about 75 volts at high revs. it would really confuse your poor battery.
look at the schematic.

You must use a regulator/rectifier.
As Ned says, refer to the original schematics as they are how you wanna be setup.

I'm chaning one 2002 wiring but I would like to do the oposite, i.e., everything to the battery.
If you what to keep the ligths separete like the original one, you have one yellow that goes to the regulator and then to the light switch, and the other yellow (the one that charges the battery) that goes to the regulator/rectifier, than it goes out of the reg/rec in RD/WH to the key swith, and there it connects with a RD/BK and charges the battery.
This is the original wiring.

CORRECTION
I've checked now the parts manual and in 2002 the part that carges the battery its not a reg/rec it says only rectifier. But in the diagrams it says regulator/rectifier.
I don't know what is correct, but if you go with the original wiring like I told you before, you cant go wrong !

The stator produces AC voltage. Lights can run AC or DC and the OEM headlight, brake and tail run on AC.
It must also be regulated to stop the bulbs burning out as the un-regulated voltage is high.
If you wanna charge a battery etc you need DC and therefore need to run a regulator/rectifier which regulates and changes the AC to DC. OEM also runs blinkers, horn etc of the DC.
Some guys go to a full DC setup but you need to get a rectifier that will handle the power/amps.

Thanks guys,

just what i needed to know!!

You guys think one of the stator's yellow wire will have enough juice for a 12v halogen front light, small rear light and charging the battery or am i asking for trouble here?

Reason for asking is, I have one yellow wire plugged into the regulator rectifier wich then feeds the lights, would be a quick solution if I could just run another wire of the rectifier/regulator to the battery.

Otherwise I'll have to redo the entire loom with a second regulator.

Regards.

My 02 501 FE starts brilliant off the kick since doing the same old...(valves / jets / crescent mod / dutch clog decomp & last & most noticible the stator) so intermittant e-start issues didn't bother me.

Now I've started competition enduro (clubman just for a laugh) I think I need the e start. Last week I got stuck upside down 1/2 way up a steep climb, with the bike on top of me with fuel pooring out. I was so knackeded once righted that I had to take a breather before having the puff to kick a flooded bike - now I see why enduros have e-starts.

So, current situation is bike used to e-start. Now I get nothing from the battery not even the horn. Engine & lights all work off the kick but nothing from the battery. The batt is new & on trickle charge (did work when I put new batt in but all stopped after some larger jumps on a mx track).

So I reckon I've got a broken wire or bad earth somewhere. Just about to test the wiring with a volt / resistance meter but anyone here had similar issues (save me a bit of time).

Also, I've seen on here before a thread re the best UK shop for pull up straps (straps round the rear mudguard & front forks for pulling bike out of ditches etc) cant remember the shop name.

Cheers

Arkley, try Kriega for front haul loops, top quality for £18. Not sure about the rear though...... I know someone made one out of a tie down strap.

Good luck with the electrics....... does sound like a broken or dislodged wire though.

Carl

Cheers Carl / Krieger looks good. Googled rear hauls but to no avail so far / should have asked the bloke whos bike I saw it on. Didn't look home made. Kids mx bikes have them so I'll probably look there next.
