I had a DNF racing my 09 fe450 today and it turned out to be the terminal had snapped off the battery 8O which I have never had before. I think the previous owner must have been a bit enthusiastic when tightening it up.

Should I just go for a straight replacement or would there be an advantage to upgrade it. If so what should I be looking for ?

Cheers

There are quite a few posts about the Shorai batteries. More power and less weight. Lithium-Iron.
Obviously at a cost. It seems like everyone who is using them likes them quite a bit. I think they are about $150.

Sorry to hear about your DNF.

My dealer mentioned the lithium batteries in passing. His sole comment was that they don't seem to be as reliable or last as long.

The obvious advantage to L-ion is weight but its tough to justify the price tag... Would you really notice a battery thats 1 or 2 pounds lighter? Assuming you have a regular maintenance schedule that includes checking your battery and putting it on a trickle charger when the bike sits for more then a week you should never have any problems with a standard battery.

Get a Shorai, period.

The Li Ion doesnt discharge as much in one year as a lead acid discharges in one week. The Shorai has a way better warranty than any lead acid battery ever had, and it is powerful for starting. Get the 14 Ah unit. $150. You wont need to put a tender on it, just disconnect your negative terminal for the winter in case there are any stray currents.

Lead acid technology no longer has any business being in a motorcycle

like Spanner wrote, you can make your own

Google "a123 cells" get a heap of them from one of the places that comes up then join them together .....

"Tell us more then??"

Start reading here, lots on the net.

I am going to try 4 a123 cells, $11 dollars each, lots of repackaged cells around so look for
genuine ones;

I have brought a special charger and wiring for charging, but lots say it not necessary.

Going to see if I can slip the battery up inside the backbone (650) along with relay, CDI, wiring, breather hose, etc,
I don`t use the standard air cleaner setup .

Cheers spanner

or the simplest and cheapest way is just buy a replacement lead acid and a good tender and keep it plugged in when the bikes not in use.

4 years using an Optimate 4 and i've never had a battery problem since starting using it.
