Battery not charging?

My 04 550 doesn't appear to be charging the battery. The battery was replaced last year and when I put a charger on it, holds the charge and starts right up. The headlight works when its running, but it seems like the battery isn't charging. If the headlight works, does that mean that it should be charging the battery? Or is there a seperate regulator, circuit for the battery? I have to confess.. I haven't put a meter on the battery to see if it the voltage goes up when its running.

Putting a volt meter accros the battery (set on DC Volts) before starting and then start. If the voltage goes up it is charging. Should be at least 13.8v when running
 
with the volt meter connected to the battery. I have 14volts. When I start it, it dips down, then goes back up to 14v and stays there. So, no charging.
 
Well, generally a battery at rest and fully charged is about 12.8 volts, maybe 13 volts at most - unless you have something other than a stock lead acid battery (some LION/LIOP batteries hold about 14 volts at rest when charged).

Let the bike sit overnight at least - test the voltage after having let the battery rest. What is the voltage then?

If the battery is a standard lead acid battery and it is 14 volts when the bike is running then I am betting the battery is being charged.
 
Dont forget to allow for voltmeter error.... if the meter reads 14v before starting and then returns to 14v after startup then i say your meter is inaccurate and your bike is not charging your batt. make sence?
 
Yeah what sort of multi meter is it? Does not sound correct to me. But then it wouldn't be the first post I got wrong. So your Multi Meter showed 14.00 Volts before start and after start?
I just tested my battery voltage on my FE570, 12.28Volts before start and 14.43Volts when running.
 
It a totally awesome Simpson Analog meter. I asure you it is 100% accurate. I can watch the needle on it and the only time it dropped was when the bike was started. It didn't go up either. The bike has been sitting for more than a week prior to yesterdays test. So, the battery voltage hadn't dropped in all that time. And I didn't have a charger on it.
What's weird is that the light works, so there must be a seperate set of windings for both the charging circuit and the lighting coil?

Wow! Mine won't even crank at 12.2v. It takes a min. 12.8v for mine to start. Always shows 14.4-5v at idle or riding.

Can a few of you guys check the voltage at your starter when cranking? I get 9-10 volts there. Just seems low but everything ohms out right.
 
Mine dipped to about 12v or so. I know it didn't go to 9V. I'm pretty sure the voltage could drop below 12v when cranking based on your battey condition and load. (cold or hard to crank motor)
 
Leave a load on the battery (headlight on or something) to drain the battery a bit so the voltage is reduced to a value lower than your baseline is now. Once it is something less than the 14 VDC (~13 - 13.5 VDC or so) you are reading re-run the test to see if the voltage increases while the bike is running.

As far as i know the lighting system runs off of a separate coil that produces AC voltage. At least thats the way it is with the SEM. If your trying to reason or diag the problem using the lights as a reference it could lead to some confusion.
Bad solder connections on the stator have been a known problem with this year. Easy to check, easy to fix.

No real instructions really. Pull it off and inspect all the connections. Anything questionable or loose gets resoldered.
 
Thanks Berger. I'll pop the side cover off and check it out. I wasn't sure what the stator is. I'm assuming its the pickup attached to the ignition cover?
 
It's the coiled winding unit inside the cover, not so much the pickup/trigger.
