i just found this site. this is great.
i have a question. i have a 1998 600 fe and am having a lot of backfiring when i let off the gas and have the engine braking. i get some backfiring while idling also. Is this because i am to lean or to rich. which jets should i start working on and which direction should i go.
 
It could be too lean but it could also be that your exhaust is leaking and can draw air into it to cause an "afterburner"
 
Generally backfiring on decel(aka decel popping) is caused by a lean condition. Could be jetting, an exhaust leak, or an intake leak. If you eliminate leaks, or other potential problems related to carbueration then you can work on jetting.
The only way to be sure of your current jetting situation is to have the bike on a dyno with a sniffer. Otherwise you'll be making guesses as to what needs to be done.
Many times a quick fix to decel popping is to richen the idle mixture. This may clear it up assuming there is no other problem with the fuel system.
 
Backfiring

Hi, coop........ Welcome aboard!!! Good to have another member, and another 'Berg rider around.
I just corrected same problem with my '98 fc; turned out to be a combination of leaky intake manifold ( between carb and head), and an exhaust system leak. The manifold was the original, had started to crack and was bleeding air into the flow, and the exhaust leak was caused by deteriorated sealant at both the exhaust ports and at the joint in front of the muffler.
I replaced the manifold, and pulled the exhaust and cleaned all the old sealant off, resealed with hi-temp"Supreme Black" sensor-safe gasketing silicone from CarQuest. Cured the problem outright. Didn't have to check or change jetting, as symptoms were slow-onset, not overnight or between rides.
If you are still running the OEM Dellorto carb, and the problem showed up spontaneously, between rides, or during a ride, the problem might be just a matter of grit or dirt in the carb. I've had that problem fairly regularly, just have to pull carb, disassemble and clean thoroughly, use fine wire and pipe-cleaners in all the passages and jets, and blow out with air.
