Okay, I installed the auto decomp (dutch clog)upgrade on my 98 600 last nite. I put it all back together, installed the starter and tried to spin the motor on the work bench. The starter spun till tdc and couldnt push it through a cycle. Experimenting I snugged up the exhaust valves and the starter really labored to spin the motor but spun the motor. I was a little concerned about the dutch clog when I installed it. It seems to "over rotate" in the decomp position. The nub that lifts the exhaust valve does not sit at 90 degrees on the cam but at about a 45. I thought this would be enough clearance but I guess not. My thinking is I have to add some material to the decomp so that it sits off the cam and brings the nub to a 90 degree angle. Is my thinking right? Can I do this with some J-B weld or should I get something welded and then grind it down? I hope I made this clear enough, thanks!

I thought the new decomp was for 01 and up. I just assummed it was, not really sure if it is a dirrect replacement for the pre 01 bikes.
Just a thought. I could have it all wrong and it may be fine.

i've attached a photo of the dutch clog in my '04 in the resting position. is this what you get? note how the decomp pretty much fills the hole end to end in the cam. does yours go almost to the end or is there a big gap? the dclog type is shorter than the stock 01-early 03 and is used with a camwheel that is steel and narrower where the decomp goes thru (look at the thickness at the holes seen in the pic). if your camwheel is alum and thick, the dcomp will not go to the end and prolly will not do the proper lift which iirc is about 0.9mm.

berger, just noticed your sign.: frogzilla..thats good

Hey Ned, couldnt find the pic you talked about. I would love to see it before I do something drastic or stupid! I will check your gallery

Frogzilla! A bike that's more sought after than one of Smet's factory Bergs.. hehe  If I remember correctly, this bike came with external case lubrication.

Sorry for the hi-jack. (Ned's fault)

Okay found the pic, the pic seems to show your decomp in more of a vertical position on the cam. It is hard to say if it is 90 degrees but I dont trhink mine sits that vertical. i will try to post a pic on here today if I get a chance.
