Hey guys,

new rider here (Canadian living in Iceland) with a 2008 fe450

having lots of trouble finding a replacement lever for the front brake... Long story that starts with me ordering from http://www.midwestme.com/pages/product.html thinking it would work.

turns out this lever does not have the 'tab' which presses the brake light switch :( I give up and send the lever back to the US from Iceland. (send the clutch back as well cause i was dumb and ordered the brembo one)

yesterday I was @ a local MX shop and they have ASV levers on for 50% off (along with all stock berg parts @ 60% off!!) so i get the guys to confirm it would work and grab both a clutch and brake lever (nice berg blue) and get excited for shorty levers again.

These are ASV F3 and while I need to hammer out the bushing for the clutch lever, the brake the exact same :( there is no 'tab' to engage the brake light switch.

edit: part number is - BHF32-B

Looking @ the master cylinder it looks like the switch is meant to integrated into the unit, but in our (or at least my) case, the switch is 'outboard' of the perch and requires some extra material on the lever to activate it.

Hope this makes sense and someone is able to give me some ideas on making this work...

There is very little pressure needed to make the switch work, so maybe epoxy something to the end, or something/anything?

you could get another rear brake banjo bolt switch, it will plug right into the front harness. I just wired my Fx for lights and am finding out it takes a fair amount of pressure to keep the switch pushed in. I have to have the to have the brake lever adjusted all the way out. Moving it in just slightly and my brake light flashes to it's own beat.

I have the ASV levers on my Berg 570, swapped them over from my KTM 525. It's a bit beyond me why ASV didn't simply design them with the tab, then they would work with or without brake light switches. This would mulitply their market size as most Bergs and EXCs are delivered with lighting on them.... :?

Anyway, a hydraulic pressure switch is a possible solution (universal ones can be had for about $15), just watch out for the right thread size and pitch. All Brembos use M10 x 1.00, jap bikes have M10 x 1.25.

Alternatively you might be able to put something on the lever to activate the switch, could even be JB welded on. I am thinking about making a small triangle piece out of hard plastic eventually.

LukasM,

thats exactly what i'm thinking, either JB Weld/some kinda epoxy or even forming the plastic triangle/tab and gluing it on (i have some gorilla glue stuff that will stick anything to anything!)

It's not like it has alot of force on it and if it does come off, it's not a huge deal until it's fixed.

I've been out on a few rides w/ the clutch lever on and I definately like the shorty feel. especially since I installed metal handguards. I find my hands are further 'in' on the bars to accomodate the guards.

So my index finger (i use 2 finger style) sits quite far inboard on the stock levers and i don't get alot of leverage. the shorty levers work much better!
