I have only recently become aware that Aprilia have a dirt bike range, i hope not to get anyone off side from this thread, but has anyone seen/riden or had anything to do with them?

It has me intrigued with thier 450 and 550's being V-twins.

The only things that i know bout them are:

1.Expensive
2.Too tall
3.Too heavy
4.Aprilia doesnt like to give or even sell workshop manuals or even parts list manuals to the end users !!!...that with the fact that is a twin with Ti valves makes me dont even consider the darn thing.

I have also read that the 550 makes so much power, it does nothing but spin the rear tire in the dirt, the 450 is better.
I think they look better than they perform.

One guy in my club bought the SXV450. It sounds almost nothing with the stock pipes. Since I'm used to my FS650 I had a hard time riding it. You have to rev it like h*ll to get some speed out of it (compared to my 650 that is).
Powervise I can't rally say since our track only allow about 130km/h but the owner says that he easily keeps up with the 525s and 560s at a nearby faster track.
It feels totally different to ride, handlingwise, compared to my 'berg. My short, only about 5laps, ride was not enough to give me a proper opinion but I thought it felt heay to flick around the corners. But you have to have in mind I rode it for five laps and it had some 10hrs on it and I didn't want to be the guy who smashed it for him. Let me get back on the subject later this summer and I'll give you a better ride report.

One thing is for sure... It looks absolutely amazing 8)

hve had a look at them on the shop floor and everything just looks too expensive to replace after a spill.

plus the fact they're about £1000 more than any berg.

Sorry to say,but in the last race I did,The Aprilia was very fast on the long straight line,in corners it was like others ,but above 180km/u going to last gear it took a lot of meters.

It looks good, but not my cup of tea.

The Aprilia SXV bikes are, if nothing else, very interesting.

That tiny little 450cc or 550cc v-twin motor stuffed into a dirt bike frame with that custom exhaust/muffler are unique.

Time will tell how long term engine service goes and how competitive they can be in racing. Reasonable availablility of parts and service might be a challenge.

I would love to ride one but I'm not sure if I want to buy one yet.

HAHA those things are total JUNK!!! I race against Daryl Atkins and he rides for the factory and hes only finished 2 races out of the 4 AMA Pro Supermoto series races so far. He usually breaks one in practice and the qualifier and it always sounds like sh#t. But atleast it looks cool

Now imagine....you are not a factory rider but still a hard rider...
with the lack of manuals (parts and WORKSHOPmanual) free avaiable to the owners, all major maintnance should be done via dealers even if you are skillfull to DIY....can we say EXPENSIVE 8O 8O 8O

The Aprilia is a work of art, to me too beautiful to take off road. But man what a looker. V-twin engine is very interesting and from what i hear makes brutal power as a 550 hard to control off road though.

Dear friends.

I just finished testdriving the Aprilia 550 supermono and 450 enduro for an Icelandic magazine (yep, we do have them) and I can tell you in brief that the 550 supermono brings pure joyment and happyness on the road while the 450 enduro does not do quite the same in enduro.
I do take my helmet off for them though to dare to try different things. Some ideas work, others do not.

Aprilia bashing on UHE? I am appalled 8O

You know such is a clear indication of insecurity in no longer owning the "Worlds" most exotic OEM offroad. :D

How funny is that. LOL

You can really tell when you start picking up enthusiasts that weren't around for Husaberg's dark days :D

A couple years ago, you could have seen this thread and assumed they were talking about a Husaberg. I found plenty of threads just like this on the web when Husaberg was going through it's intial growing pains.

It seems like Aprilia is now doing the same thing. Husabergs weren't junk when everybody was saying they were. Maybe we should give Aprilia the same benefit of the doubt. After all, we should be in a better position than anyone else to understand what it's like to own a bike that tries to do something in a new way.

thanks,

Exactly, Dale!! That´s what I have also pointed out in replys to the thread "changes for 07"
Sadly,no developement seems to be going on at Husasberg.

I "humbly" hope you are well, Dale

And how right you are about the benefit of doubt, Jason . Here is a factory trying out new ideas, and we start nagging that they are junk!!!
Life really goes in circes!!!!

Do´nt forget, that this is their first year with these bikes in production.

Be open minded.

While I have not yet seen one of these up close, my first hand experience with Aprilia has been generally excellent. I had a couple of their street bikes and one of their scooters, and all have been great performers and stone axe reliable. They were typically Italian though when it came to parts availability and prices, and in two of those three situations they guarded shop manuals as though they were Italian state secrets.

I've been watching for information on these bikes because I've thought the RXV 550 might be a great dual sport bike for me. I recall reading somewhere that the valves would likely last 10 times as long as CRF Honda valves, which sounded good until I thought about the valve problems that my red-riding friends are having.

I hope the bikes are a hit, and I hope it makes their sexy street machines more available. I guess I'm just a fan of smaller companies that compete with the giants by carving out their own niches.

While they may be doing very well in the world rounds, they must not have brought the same equipment over here to the States for Mr. Atkins to ride.

In the opening round at California at the end of April, his main race bike did not make it out of practice the second bike didn't make it out of the first timed qualifying session. They then had to take a brand new unit from their display area, put the factory suspension and wheels on it and run that for the race.

Round 2 was relatively uneventful as far as I could tell, I don't know for sure if he made it through the entire way on one bike, but his results were pretty good, but well off where he was finishing last year on the KTM.

Round 3, he made about 2 laps in timed qualifying and did not even make it back out for the LCQ.

Round 4, he put in some good laps in the first timed qualifier. Pushed the bike back to the pits half way through the second timed qualifier, then made about 5 laps in the main event before the bike was once again unrideable.

Now, I don't know if that means that ALL the bikes are junk or not, but with the amount of money that Aprilia is putting up to try to increase there marketshare in the largest motorcycle market in the world, and this being their only Stateside racing effort at this point, you would think that Darryl Atkins would get the best of what they had to offer.

I'm guessing his results to this point won't be used in any upcoming marketing campaign especially following the great year he had last year.

NorIll804,
With all do respect "knowing what I know" some of what you have stated regarding Aprilia rings true of the Husaberg effort as well.
