Man, as soon as I saw he was alright, I couldn't stop laughing. Sometimes the planets align to set the stage for a spectacularly funny get-off. Ask anyone who's ever ridden behind me.

thanks,

Too funny. I especially like the flying W death grip of revs.

we've kept some good, even great photos but we really do need a special 'hall of frame' for some of the best photos and clips. that is very funny!

the first incident was funny. the second was funny but the two together!

Taffy

while on the subject of flips, here's some vintage pix of the route 93 water crossing at blackwater back in the 80's with the famous "mud fleas" waiting at the top of the hill.

that's the one! it wasn't difficult to get up if you had any momentum at all and stayed on the pegs, but the spectators would dam up the creek and stand on the downhill bank on the best lines and then point to the worst lines so they would get a good show.
race ended in '93 due to out of control spectators. the last few years saw about 2000 people clogging that area by the creek crossing. you would literally see "the parting of the sea" (mud fleas) when you got to the top. if you didn't quite make it, the drunkest ones would grab your bike in mid flight and drag it up for you, start it, and have it ready to go by the time you climbed out of the creek. lots of fun, good mud slop.

I always wanted to try that race - the best I could muster was collecting 3-4 videos of the race...

Some funny stuff in those vids

if you have the '82 video, my brother-in-law and i have a long interview at the end and then they shot a clip of me with only my head sticking out of the water asking if they would help me start my bike.

Ned

How many times have you rode that event? Well, you have that feather in your hat!!!!

I've seen a few clips from this years LMS that rival the loop out carnage. Still, Blackwater rules. More storied please Ned. I'll send you beer!?!??!?!?!?

lee, i rode it 9 times from 1980 to 1991. started in the senior class (at the time it was over35), there were no a,b,c etc breakdowns, we all rode the same class, novice thru expert. trophied 6 times.
pull up a chair, gramps'll tell y'all a bedtime blackwater story. :backinmyday:
missed 2 due to injury. one missed year was 1981, slipped a disc in my back a month earlier, so i just pitted for our group. turns out it was a good year to miss, since it rained hard for 24 hours before the race. all the creeks were flooded. that was the year rick siemen (super hunky) rode it with a 760 maico (Used a porsche piston). about a mile into the quagmire he realized what a bad idea it was. when it died (after all, it was a maico), it was impossible to start. late in the race, one of our riders told me that another of our guys watered out way out on the course. i hopped on our trusty pit bike (78 jawa 350 six days) with some tow straps and tools and went to get him. we got his bike running so i didn't have to tow him out. about 5 miles later, ran into a group of guys trying to start a bike. i stopped to ask if i could help. it was the 760 maico. we all tried kicking it to no avail and one guy says why don't you pull him. i told them "i don't think thats a good idea" because of the terrain and the mud. rick says lets try it, so i hooked up a 10' strap and started pulling him when i hear this scream. i stop and turn around and he is sitting on his bike clawing at his prescription riding glasses which are now completely covered with mud. "i can't see!" :cursin: he was now brown from head to toe. everybody but him thought it was pretty funny. :sandwich: we finally did get him running again, and i slipped away ahead of him so i wouldn't get caught in the next episode.
