First, thanks a million for all the great advice about the oil level when the engine is both cold and warm. now my second question is that i'm having to add about 3 to 4 teaspoons of oil to the engine every week or two. i use the bike as a commuter bike everyday, putting about 20 miles a day on it. i know that this shouldn't matter becuase my FS650e in norway never needed any oil added to it. but the engine has absolutely no leak anywhere! i park it indoors and there is not one single drop of oil leaking out. where and the hell do you think 2 to 3 spoons full of oil is dissapearing to? i'm burnning oil somewhere becuase i keep needing to add a little bit of oil every week. this is perplexing to me. an ideas?

thanks for the advice, as always!

Hey Frank,

The oil is being burnt - it's as simple as that. Every engine everywhere "uses" a little bit of oil and will always need a top up now and again. For you it is happening in a mist that comes from the breather tube and back through the carb and then some from the cylinder walls.

All the best,
Simon

Hey Frank
How do you measure your oil level??
I wouldn't even know if I used that amount.

Good question. i measure the oil level by looking at my glass window window-oil glass sight (I can't even think of the correct name right now. Pathetic) every morniing before i take off to work. when the engine is cold, i see about a quarter of an inch of oil in the glass window. after a week or two, i cannot see any oil in the glass window becuase it has burnt up that quarter inch amount of oil, and hence, no oil is to be seen in the glass window. however, even though one might not be able to see the oil in the glass window, once the engine has been running and the oil gets up to running tempature, the oil will show slightly less than half full in the glass window. that when i know to add a little bit of oil to the engine; once i do that, and the engine is coold, it will again show about a quarter of an inch of oil in the glas window, subsequently, after the engine has wamed up, it is once again showing half full in the glass window. thus, when the oil has dipped just below the glass window, while cold, i know to add a tiny bit of oil in order to bring it back up to the point where the oil is now at the half way mark in the glass window while the engine is warm. I'm curious, does this make any sense at all????????

dude you gotta keep the level higher and change oil often ..Ihave the same bike ..did you remove the restrictor plate and exaust (auspuff) baffle ? if you do and then rejet it the bike goes way way faster and runs better ..good luck have any photos to share? Leon

Don't know if this will penetrate or not, but I have been working around and with 4T and diesel multi cylinder motors since early '50s, and as yet have not come across one that DOESN'T burn, or lose, a bit of oil. This covers all types of 4Ts from single and twin Britbikes, flat-4s(Corvairs and Lycomings), in-line 6,8, and 12s, good ole american V8s, 16 cylinder Fairbanks-Morse reversing diesels, and newer hi-tech computer-controled 4s, 6s, 8s, 10s......; all use or lose a bit, either thru burn or bypass. Not a big deal as long as you PAY ATTENTION to your ride....... and correct any large scale loss - a teaspoonful in a few days is minor - just don't let it get out of hand. Like Brylcreem, a lttle dab'll do ya.....

Don't lose sight of that oil Frank!
And Greasy, your right about the baffle, he he. What restrictor plate you talking about though?

Where does this baffle come off from?? Does an FS550E have it as well?

Thanks!

Taw,
I believe he's talking about the insert at the end of his silencer. Like on my Akrapovic, they come with an insert that makes the opening smaller to comply with noise standards. You need them for off road use with a spark arrestor but for street riding im not sure if they have the same rules.
