Amazing day!! Clear ice, no snow. The 550 was working like a champ. Dragging the bars and grinning like a fool. Rode for about a 2 hours. Max speed on the digital unit said 140 kmh. Perfect.

Rolled up to the truck to load up and call it a day and realized that the motor was knocking like crazy. Definitely sounded like it was the bottom end.

Called BOSS up and told him my symptoms.

"Uh...Coffin...I know you don't want to hear this but I would say you blew the main bearing"

"%$^#*&@....Great"

NSman...expect a motor on your bench by Wednesday!!!

Drain your oil Coffin, tell me if you see debris on the magnet of the drain plug. There is always a chance that the primary drive nut has backed off...it also results in a severe lower end knock....fingers crossed.

Sound advise. You don't hear of too many 550's chucking mains.

I have not drained the oil yet, although I do have the bike half stripped down in preparation to yank the motor. I did re-torque the primary nut to specification when the bikes was new. Could it have backed off after that?

I will check the drain plug magnet before I do anything else.

NSman told me this morning that it may have something to do with me trying to do the land speed record attempt. I shared with him that I had held it WFO in 6th to see what the digital unit would register as Max Speed....which was 140kmh. He suggested that it probably is not a good idea to hold them WFO like that for extended periods. I'm sure that I knew better but I was having too much fun to be responsible. I geuss I like to learn things the hard way!

hey coffin,

looks like you haven't lost the ol backing in skills. now we just need to get you out to a 6 hr race in alberta. lastyear Jay and i did in two sets of main bearings on the ice (450 and 550). before you go yarding the motor out, I agree with the other guys...check the magnetic plug. the screen will likely show nothing...the bearing material tends to show up on the magnet only.

Ahhh.........@#$%^
Way too much metal on the magnet to make me feel okay about re-torquing the primary nut and hoping for the best. I yanked the motor and will be shipping it to NSman tomorrow. One interesting point, as I was fumbling with the carb to remove it, I noticed that the hot start knob was pulled open. Now I may have done this when moving it around, or...it may have been left open the last time I started it. This would mean that it was pounded hard for 15 mins with the hot start open...140kmh speed run plus 15-20 hard laps on the oval. Fryguy & BOSS say that this would have just burnt a valve and would not have cooked the bottom end???

Thanks for the comments Nizzo. I certainly miss the ice racing series out west. We are slowly trying to get more guys involved here on the east coast so that maybe someday another east coast throttle junkie can go out there and try to hold their own against you monkeys!!

In terms of joining a 6hrs effort...as long as I can enter as Harvey Mushman so that the life insurance people don't find out!

i don't think the hotstart would damage ANYTHING WHATSOEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it can only pass so much air. at low revs it makes a real difference but that hole doesn't get any bigger does it??????????????????

so 100% sure no problem at all whatsoever at all none zilch nowt.

maybe i'm not clear.

Taffy

Okay....the heck with the shipping. I have recruited a co-driver for the 5 & 1/2 hour drive. See you late today.

Cheers
