As far as I know I think I might be the only one using a "closed" helmet while motarding...

Why? Personally I never go offroad and because of that I just dont really like these FMX helmets, I tried one before but it just feels odd...

Any other idiots here like me?

Yes me too. It's just too much wind and noise with an open MX helmet. Then I don't race, I'm just an ***** who likes to drive :) I suppose a true SM track will get you really warm and then an open helmet is better? I go open MX on the ice track and I'm still sweating so I guess I'm slow, lazy and bad on tarmac.

Yeah I guess the warmth could be an issue, but most of the time I just brap around in the town so for me it's not a problem!

well for what it's worth, I totally understand closed helmets :)

But have found myself gravitating towards open-face and goggles. To me goggles feel more "direct". But I'm 100% sure that a visored helmet will feel more "direct" to the next guy :)

I use MX helmet + goggles on the street too. But I always always wear earplugs anyway.

I know what you mean by "direct feel", with my visor down it feels more enclosed and somehow that really affects my "wheeling" skill so therefore I tend to ride with my visor up while in town and the speeds aren't that high! :)

By earplugs, do you mean music plugs or those yellow ones to dampen the noise?
If you mean to protect your ears, why? Is your Husa that loud? I run my without dB-killer with full akra system and for me the noise isn't that bad.

I'm already starting to notice hearing loss at 35 :/ from headphone use and clubbing as a kid, and biking as "grownup" (haha)

not terrible but noticeable

I suspect the wind noise to be the worst offender, which the ear plugs cut by filling out the helmet better :) haha ... i guess that's ironic?

i also find that the plugs help me concentrate somehow

i love the bike noise itself! my drz sounds quite good with airbox open and french Ti pipe :) very suave! and I loooove love the insistent gasping Darth Vader intake noise on the 570! and the MECHANICAL!! sound of the golden age 'Bergs

best sounding bikes otherwise: 2v Ducati with Termignoni pipes, mid/early 2000s Husqvarna cammy high-compression 450s

re. helmets with visor - I really really like my AGV AX-8 DS; well made, detachable visor and peak, lightweight, comfortable

Yeah, it's good to take care of your hearing while it works, I actually have about 30% lower frequency range on my left ear than on my right because of inflammations/infections as a child (Still a child if you ask my dad) so I know how you feel! :(
You mentioned wind noise being a factor and I agree with you, this is where the visor comes in handy though!

I use a closed one as well! A black matte Shoei XR1100 with smoked visor on a black berg!

Wind noise is just to high with a MX helmet when you are driving on roads. If I go for a longer ride with a closed helmet I also use ear plugs. With my CBR I have no choice but to use ear plugs. If I forget them my ears rings for many hours afterwards. The noise in high speeds are really bad.....

I also use a smoked visor, looks cooler and is better IMO!

Get a good mx helmet and goggles and you wont have problems with wind.

I guess thats true, I have an old Airoh MX helmet which I use when driving my ATV but it's **** ugly and damaged so I'll stick with my visored helmet this summer out atleast!;)

When racing, everything you can do to make you feel that you are going slower than you really are, is worth doing. Everything that steals your attention from the activities that make you go faster, is worth removing.

Any input to my senses requires some capacity from the brain to process. If that input also is warning you of a possible risk (noice in helmet=going fast=better stay alert) it also makes you take precautions that stops you from going any faster. Alltogether, wearing earplugs during RR, definitely helps me to lower laptimes.

I use both prefer full face helmet (xr 1000 shoei) when it is cold or riding fast tracks (+150 km/h).
I also have mx helmet shoei vfx-w and I like it more for when it's hot and it is also possible to ride 170+ with the mx helmet but the full face is better for this way less turbulence and you do'nt use neck muscles to much...

I know what you mean about the intake sound, not noise, more like music. With the closed helmet, I like the option of wearing sunglasses during the day, and being able to pocket them as night falls, for street riding. Polarized lenses cut sun glare on the asphalt quite well, but make lcd displays partially disapear. Off road, I prefer the open helmet with clear goggles, as the woods can get dark even in daylight. I can normally mitigate the sun with the peak. As far as wind noise. The right grip makes that disapear pretty quickly. Or is that just a perception?
