just came to my attention that all SEM ignition production stopped at the end of last year. nothing is being made......

if you use these electrex stators and you blow a coil you are phucked! you really do need to use a sparks/taffmeister's stator.

what i will say is that i've been asked to send a man in the know any knackered coils i have and he'll repair them so i'll make an appeal here for anyone with one to forward it to me and i'll see if i can get it repaired? if it's doing nothing in your shed it's no good but if i can do anything with it then we can come to an agreement?

Hi Taffy,

Where did you here that news about the SEM's?.
Yes I have heard down the pipe line that the Electrex stators are hard on cdi/coils.
I have a few duff SEM coils here, not sure exactly what models, will have to cross reference the numbers, but there here if you want them.

Regards

Sparks.

RE: Re: all SEM production has stopped

i got the news about a fortnight ago and completely forgot to mention it to you!

but coils are going to be a sought after commodity if we can't get them repaired or another way forwards. the good news in a way is that IF IF IF we can't repair them, yes it'll be expensive, but it could become viable to create a new system altogether. yes i'll try and get a few repaired steve.

RE: Re: all SEM production has stopped

whats the problem with the electrex stators , do they try to push the output voltage too high or something, cheers Matt

RE: Re: all SEM production has stopped

as i understand it there is no diode present like in the SEMs to bleed off the voltage peaks. whilst the voltage is sustainable foe short bursts it is just like flicking peas at a tin can on the fence and only a matter of time.....

at present i've only heard of the problem twice.
the trouble i find is that if i were a dealer and i'd just screwed up my check i would cover myself with this myth.

when i first started a dealer told me balancer bearings were always going "left, right and centre" but the more i got into it the more i found that he might not have built up his cranks right and it was the mains exploding that was doing the damage.

so which story are you going to tell for this mythical problem just hours after you should have sorted it?

do you get my drift here?

heard of the words "vested interests"?

for what it's worth i went through 3 cdi/coils (on my 4th) with the sem stator. i have a sparks rewind now. they just go. shut the eng. off go to restart and no spark. i redid my grounds (earth) if it goes again will try to fit a MSD ign. they all blew when tuning, not on the trail. the last one i started the eng a total of 5 times, on the 6th no spark. am i just lucky?? i can see why sem went down the tube.

A MSD ignition and coil may just work..........http://www.msdpowersports.com/mc-3.html.........if you can find a place to mount it.

as understand it, at present it won't eric. the CDI is in the SEM coil so you'll need a CDI unit and a coil and MSD aren't set up for a magnetic pick up over their more usual hall effect trigger! i guess we can go to a later flywheel but it's mounting the whole pick - up thing.

i have a member of UHE from down at el paso who has an '04 unfortunately but he knows someone with two huseys from 100 miles north. the bloke has two huseys and he's trying to persuade him to take one of them down to brett at MSD.

it's difficult to know what brett knows, they try and get technical and then fold infront of your eyes when you know as much as them (OYK's hand was up my arse so i'm not lying!) but his last words to me were; "well if we had one here to look at we could make it work perhaps!".

so if anyone here wants to take a pre '04 down there to el paso and add to this adventure i'd be grateful.

G,day Taffy
I have a couple of rooo -ted CDI coils of a '99 FC 600, yes it is the coil that is screwed .. so i am in the market for a cheap alternative ..

Is it feasible to use the older husky or KTM SEM cdi/coil on the bergs or does ot have to be the digital unit ? The wire colors are the same but there is no grey or white.

look in the doc under electricals. it's all explained there
