Hey guys.

I've got a 2000 FE600 which I love to death even with its issues. It goes like stick. Last dynoed around 70hp.

But as they all do it has buggered the E start. But from what I have read and heard they usually weld themselves up and jam the starter on. Mine backfired and jammed so is it just a case of pulling it down and unjam it? or is it stuffed.

I am also looking at a 2005 FE550. It has a noisy cam chain and wondering what this could possibly be. I have "heard" they have issues with cams and hence a noisy cam chain. What else should I look for on the bike before handing over the cash.

Cheers
Matt

Hi there,
I had a 2000 600, it was a great bike,and damn fast to.
Cant help out with the starter problem, mine was a kicker.

I have had 2, FE550 04 , about the same as the 05, the first one, I put 185hrs of hard riding and racing , about 8800km.
The only things I could break were folding the rims, cracking the rear rim, broke out numerous spokes and broke one radiator rubber mount. That was being pretty hard on it though.

The second one I still have, lots of hours, had the engine appart once as a precaution, did mains, gear box bearings, cam bearings, follower bearings ,rings, cam chain and that was it i think. it all appeared in good nick still inside. It still goes great and not about to get rid of it soon.

The bikes would depend on hours, whos been riding it, type of riding , maintainence and so forth as to what needs replacing. I dont think i have heard of to many Cam issues in them.

The 550 is a lot less power than the old 600 I would say, but easier to ride ,not to many issues.

Your probably gonna have to split the cases. The starter sprags are none to grenade from back firing through the intake. Alot of times they will take out the motor, so it's best not to put off the repair.
I'm not aware of any cam issues as well. At that age the cam followers could be shagged as well as the chain. If the followers are shagged it could damage the cam.

well the 600 has had the starter problem for about 5 years now. I just took the gear out that runs between the starter and the sprag bearing. Been running fine like that.

Anyways besides the point. I bought the 550. Took it for a ride and just loved how it handled compared to the 600. Turns in MUCH better. Getting the shop to fix the cam chain before I pick it up. I can't be bothered atm. Working to much OT so thought bugger it they can fix for a lil extra $$$ and I can just ride then lol.

Was wrapped with the condition of the bike. Kms it had were mostly road not dirt. So has had a pretty easy life. No leaks etc were visible. Started like a burg does and no smoke what so ever even on start up. He said it hadnt been started in a while also so seems to be pretty good overall.

Might go right over it next year do bearings etc to be safe.

I finaly logged in again.

I finaly fixed the speedo and milage thing too. It's been awhile.

STEADY

4831 miles, bought her in march 09, still have not done the valves, or the carb.

High elevation swamps today with a new tire, very grassy.

I only fear the law.
