Hi Coffin, I know Bruce and the boys at Valley Yamaha are first class when it comes to service and helping a fellow biker out. I do however have a question related to your issue if you don't mind as I'm seriously looking at the leftover 07 Bruce has in his shop. Do you know what was determined to be the cause of your engine failure and how many hrs/kms on the clock? Also I'm curious how much one could expect to pay for such a rebuild.
Thx
P.S I assume you are happy with your bike, I know I've driven a few of the 550's and boy oh boy do they ever put a grin on my face.
RESPONSE
Well...where to begin...I have personally rode and seriously abused over 50..yes 50...Husabergs as one of the trial bosses at the Husaberg dealer events in both the US and Canada for model years 04, 05, 06 & 07.
This includes 380s, 400s, 450s, 470s, 501s, 550s & 650s. FCs, FEs and FSs included.
I have had only a couple of failures. A 650 in 04 that was the victim of an assembly error, (Some assembly guy was hung over on a Monday is my geuss). We had that one repaired and back in the woods for the dealers to ride within a couple hours. The other one was Fryguy's race bike from the ISDE in Poland. It came back to North America and we used it at a dealer event where I hammered it until it got mad at me and quit. I'm not 100% on what went wrong with it, but the distributor repaired it and NSman bought and sold it to Hoyt who is very happy with it. It was hand prepped by Roland in Sweden for Fryguy. Fry says that there is nothing special done to it but that bike seems to have something extra. It rips.
Then there is my personal 550 which I spun the main bearings out of. Truth be told, I was holding it WFO in 6th gear trying to see what I could get the digital speedo unit to show as top speed on the ice. Probably is not the smartest thing I've done lately
Everybody has opinions on what causes what but I really don't care. I know stuff gets thrashed in this sport and its just part of the game.
There are other failures that I have heard about but certainly nothing abnormal for these types of machines. There are lots of great examples of Bergs with tons of hours on the motors.
My best geuss is that I probably over revved it being a *******. I definitely was holding it wide open for too long in top gear. It was a dumb thing to do and you would never hold it on that long on any super moto track or in any other riding conditions. Certainly not with out different gearing and set-up. I have a hard time not abusing bikes. I'm programmed wrong. Normal people don't tend to break stuff like I do. That does not mean I'm some gnarly rider...I'm just a greedy throttle junkie who lacks restraint sometimes.
Bottom line...Husabergs are top shelf equipment and anybody that says different truly have no clue what they are talking about. VERY reasonable price for what I had done...less than a $1000 which surprised me. NSman was more than fair with both parts and labour.
Blow any Jap 4stroke up and it will easily cost as much or more for what I had done.
No..I'm not on the payroll. I'm just someone who was lucky enough to participate in some of their events as a volunteer when Bergs were distributed by BMG Sports. I just think they are great bikes.
Get the Berg ....they are dead sexy and as badass of a 4stroke bike as you can buy.
Yes, I drank the Koolaid!!
In terms of the re-build....main bearings and a piston. Put a new timing chain and replaced seals, ect, while they had it apart. No big deal....it purrs like a kitten now...A very angry kitten!
Cheers
