Yup, my dear friends, I have a crack in the cases by the swingarm mount (the common 2001 engine weak link)

Its been there for 1/2 year and weeps a wee bit oil.
My deep thinking question is;

Is it ok just to leave it there as it does not seem to grow/ expand more, or do I need to teke the damn engine apart and weld the fuc...ng thing.

Please say that I can just leave it.

Please............!!!!!

OK....leave it untill it gets worse :D . Happy?? We all know you can have it welded. My question is.... could you drill holes at opposite ends of the crack to stop the spread (small holes mind you) and then epoxy (JB Weld) the cracks and holes. I think it is something I would try.

IMHO you will never get a satisfactory weld because the crack will contain oil. the cases are so thin that there will be distortion despite your best efforts.

drill at the end of the crack as mentioned and then hope...

Taffy

Take the engine apart and weld the fuc..ng thing! :(
I would first find a very, very competent welder who doesn't just weld trailer hitches for a living. Have him look at the problem before removing the engine so he can visualize where he can build up the area (maybe take some pictures as well). He'll have to take steps to insure there is no warping from the heat of the welding as well as getting the oil from the crack.
It can be done and Brutus will thank you by wreaking havoc on all orange, blue, green, yellow and red bikes who dare question his thumposterone!

Or you could always "just leave it".

Good luck my friend,

Log

How much would it be for new updated cases? They come with all the bearings installed I think.

Mine (froggys) was welded by Chester at Nevada Motorcycle Specilities. I can weld ok ( better than trailer hitches) but he is a Master with a Tig. Never a weep since or warp. Like Logjump said be sure the guy is good.
Dale recomended I drill both ends, clean very well and put silicone if I was not going the weld route.
Or you can just leave it.
ps cases must be split to do it properly. It is right at the bearing.

I'm glad you said that Bob, cause I didnt have the guts to mention it. The repair looks real good

Yeah I saw the weld job by the swing arm. For a minute I imagined Bobzilla with a welder helmet on and sparks flying. Pretty nice welding if you ask me.

So you have two options:
1-JB
2-Professional welder

Don't forget the third option;
do noting and wait and see.

But, something like that would drive me nuts wondering if and when it would get worse. Option 2 might take a little more work but you wouldn't have to think about it any more.

Hi Heimir had the same problem with my 01 FE400 so i split the cases
got it welded by a good welder, 6mo later cracked again now JB welded
the crack/weld 2 weeks later leaking again what fixed it new 03 cases
which was warranti by BMG the importer that was very generous of them
consider it way out warranty
Happy trails VIKING

Thanks, friends of the "round table"
As always helpful and informative.

After having scratched my head till blood weeps out, I have decided to split the fuc$%&#$ ing engine and weld the damn crack!!

And then Brutus Maximus vill idle happily over land, sea and japanese culture..........
Again.

Best,

Could you tell Taffy that you guys are not part of Scandinavia? And that you do have trees?

Oh and congrats on the welding job. Pictures?
