hi all, i have a 99 fc400, 2500klms, i live in australia about 100mt elevation. I purchased bike 2nd hand about 5 years ago, it has always been hard to start, i have played with the carby, i can either get it to start easy when cold but it has a flat spot or hard to start cold and smooth through the rev range, i checked valve clearances, any assistance with recommendation's on jet sizes, clip position etc, any help appreciated.

Hard to start

Hello.
Start to clean the carb, then change the atomiser and needle.
Change sparkplug.
Thats a good start.

after reading the doc i will make sure my settings are as follows.
For a 400; 200MJ, DR266, K35 needle on C1, 40PJ, 3.25mm slide cutaway, 45 choke jet, PS = 1-turn = Sea level.

Yes.

It`s a good idea reading the doc and search in the old post`s in this amazing forum.

I have ordered the cd1 jet, i stripped my carby and it was missing, without this site i would never have known, the local dealers didnt know that.

I had similar issues with my '03 400. I recommend the cdi jet / emusion tube, it worked well for me. My current settings from around 100 - 500 metres on vancover island. Not perfect but not bad either.

Main jet - 185
Needle jet - 270DR
Needle - K51
Needle clip - 2
Pilot jet - 40
Throttle slide - 4mm
Choke jet - 45
mixture screw - 1 turn out
Emulsion tube fitted
