going to look at a 96 fe400 on saturday. owner says it has a new cam chain and top end. is there any thing I should be looking at or asking questions tnx in advance ed

You are obviously getting it for steal, there are some amazing offers for later modles going around at present.

My 2p's worth would be budget for a suspension service front and back at that age and hope its been done previously. Fluids are oherwise sure to be shot. Engine wise, I think the other guys will have more experience as to possible issues....

Look very carefully at the engines cases and check for cracks at the rear of the motor where the swing arm bolt goes through. The area near the counter shaft sprocket is where cracking is most prone. The crack or cracks can be hairline and very difficult to see. A thorough cleaning / degreasing of the area may be necessary. If you find cracks its probably a deal killer. If not keep the chain slackened properly, the swingarm bolt greased and the front motor mounts tight.

I can think of another.

I'm not sure when the SEM ignition went to the external rotor. But my 94 had an internal rotor. These internal rotors had the magnets glued in and over time the glue would sometimes fail or would start to decay. If the magnets come out it will destroy the stator. So have a look at the ignition.
