I currently have a 1995 FE 501. Can I use a 1997 FE 501 camshaft with the auto decompression in the 1995 head?

If this is possible, should i disconnect the cable from the kickstarter and let the auto decompression on the cam do it's job?

All input is appreciated!

I believe it will. You could disconnect the kickstart activated decomp but leaving it in place won't hurt anything.

I would use the 04-08 ADD (auto decompression device) as it is the best one
A new properly wound ADD spring or Taffmeisters modified spring

I am sure Taffy will come along here any moment and give us the final word on this.

Consider new while you are in there:
KTM cam
04-08 cam sprocket
Cam bearings
Timing chain
Cam follower bearings
Water pump seal
Updated water pump impeller

all that Eric says really... I turn the cam cover over, lay the cam in it and make sure that 100% of the CFB is pushing the rocker arm. then Like Eric, I make sure the camchain aligns with lower down and that is about it really..

I can get brand new factory cams for the pre 1997s BTW
