hey, i'm new to the site, I recently bought two bergs , 98 fc501 94 fe501(basket case) I'm putting the 94 together, should the bolts on the upper sprocket be horizontal to the head when installing the cam chain? I have shop manual for the 98 but not the 94 and there are some differences, Thanks

get the engine with the piston at precisely TDC and then place the cam in with the lobes up symetrically. you have to be meticulous about TDC. then turn the crank 360 and the lobes will be down. fit the rocker cover.

so in answer to your question: the bolts will be over and under.

Taffy

Taffy, Thank for the info, that's what the 98 shop manual said but the cam on the 94 is differnt whith the lobes up or down symetrically the bolts are side by side, that's what had me confused. I assumed they changed the bolt pattern when they added the decompression weight, mine has none.

Theres got to be a theory here Taffy!
Why fit cam with lobes up and rotate 360? and not just fit cam with lobes down at TDC?
Ease of symetry? I have always assembled with lobes down, only because I know no different.
I am always keen to learn (albeit slowly, so type slower!) so please help enlighten my dark little world.
Cheers... Darryl.

I can tell within a cat's whisker what the cam timing is with them up.
