Please Please can anyone help!!! can't get my berg to kick start of electric start. I have been told by all the specialists that they are notorious for not starting and to forget the electric start. I have got it running after god knows how many kicks.
I am told there is a knack to it!! The only knack I cam think of is to buy an o4 onwards and put this one in a skip. It is not a mechanical problem and it has spent a number of weeks with a specialist, who still couldn't solve the problem. Why have an electric start if they don't work???

It is driving me nuts and I would love to get out on it.
 
Hi Browm,

Welcome to the UHE, your question is not uncommon but they are not as bad as some people make out.
One or two points to check, like how mechanically sound is the motor, valve clearences, make sure the decomp is set correctly this is well known problem.Check performance of the ignition, spark should be able to jump 10mm on a normal kick.
What jetting are you running. When starting no throttle should be used.
We have a female member on the site and her 650 is in a different frame and she can't run a kick start her problem was the ignition stator which I wound for her and now starts off the button hot or cold.
Let us know your findings on the above questions.

Thanks for the reply! The bike is mechanically sound and engine rebuilt and checked by DCR. Two Husaberg specialists have had it and I am afraid been unsuccessful. Do you carry out work on bergs if so where are you?

Hi Brown,

I do but only my own,I'm also pretty new to Husabergs but if you look through the Doc there is a lot of useful information in there. I don't think there is any Bergs in my area for miles.
My location is Javea by the Med Spain, removed from Cornwall UK.
Try the ignition test, you need to know if your ignition is in good shape, if you ain't jumping 10mm then I would say this could be your problem.

The pre 04 bergs like the valves on the tight side of oem spec for estart, make sure the decomps are adjusted correctly, sparks has solved many issues with the reluctant estart bergs when the issue is the stator/ignition.. if you have good compression and fuel, it has to be one of these issues...

my '03 had similar problems after a new stator and rotor from a main bearing failure :roll: I was almost at the match in the tank stage when I replaced the CDI/coil and hey presto....easy starting :D After stator failure, and kicking over with no earthed plug then the CDI can fail :( Circa £160 from DCR though :shock:
 
Dropped it off at Taffy's on Saturday just waiting to see. I will keep you posted.

I had exactly the same problem. Bought it in the winter and tried to start it two months later. It ran well when I got it so it shouldnt have been an issue I thought.

Started with going through the carburetor and electric system but found no fault. Went on to the valves and clearance was ok. Changed plug didnt do any difference. So eventually I left it in for a service but that didnt help either.

I couldnt kick start it but it started after I towed behind a car (>40 km/h starting in 4:th gear) it ran perfect. Couldnt kick start it after it got slightly cold again so what I did was to tow it. Got really fed up with the berg but took it out on a track day on asphalt (had friends with car so...) and after that it has been going like clockwork.

So for me I suspect the gasoline was old and the engine needed to be revved/cleansed of soot etc.

they simply won't stand being started and re-started without a run! if and when you get it running you must take it for a spin to burn the carbon off the plug.

i worked on the bike last night and tonight. i have gone through the cam timing, tappets. stripped and blown out the carb whilst checking settings. i have also set TDC on the flywheel using the deadstop method and

I'M AFRAID TO SAY THAT YET AGAIN THE TIMING MARKS ARE'NT A TRUE REFLECTION OF WHERE TDC IS. IT IS 9 DEGREES OUT.

the real TDC is 9D to the right of the mark on the crank. and as the engine runs CW from the right that means that the ignition timing is ******** by 9d.

i have marked the flywheel and left the battery on charge tonight with a new plug ready to go in when i try and start it tomorrow.

i like it when i find something wrong but we'll have to see if this is the real culprit.

as per our chat on the dog'nbone.

i have ******** the ignition until it can't go any further to the right and by my calculation it still fires at 45degrees BTDC when it should be 36-40.

the bike wouldn't start in the old ignition position so i ******** it some, then some more, then some more and and it really wanted to go but upon inspection the plug which had a nice deep blue spark was not wet so i used an old trick of mine: i poured a tiny amount of fuel in the sock which still didn't work and then some in the plug hole and she started next time.

with it running i set the ignition timing and the carb, then went for a spin and tickled it some more. it sstarted first or second kick only after i finally had the ignition timing right.

so i'll see how it starts in the morning when cold and again after work tomorrow evening. it looks very promising!

I'm really interested in this thread as I think the timing is out on my '02 fs650e. I'm going to check it more accurately later next week and also look at the auto decomp. I'd like to get it starting on the button as at the moment it will only fire on the kick start
 
Taffy updated me on progresslast night and he will be speaking again tonight. He has got it starting on the second kick and wanted to try it out from cold today! Will keep you posted

i thought that i had texted you this morning and it has now occured to me that that was a landline i texted too.....(LOL!)

anyway, went out to it this morning and it started first kick. 10 seconds and off with the choke. warmed it up for 2-3 minutes, stopped it and it started first kick warm....

i think this has cheered you up hasn't it? anyway, off out tonight...

Excellent news. Sounds as though it's all in the timing then assuming other things are okay. That's given me food for thought and I'll give my 650 a tweak next week
