Hi!

My 650 wont start after a winter in the garage.

Changed/checked spark plug, but still nothing. Wont even fire once. Im using the e-starter..
Fuel on the tank.

It gets cold here in norway (-30c / -22f)

What can cause this? Started perfectly before the winter!

Thanks,
Lasse

What year is your bike, Lasse?

I had a hell of a time getting my bike running this year, even after going through the carb. Turns out, I forgot how to kick it :) I was using the arch of my foot on the kick starter, causing my toes to hit the footpeg, making my kick short of what was needed to get it started. After hundreds of kicks, I remembered though, so all was well :)

I would suggest kicking to start when cold, then using the e-start when warm, at least until you've got it running for the season. You could wear out the sprague troubleshooting, as others have done :(

i would say stator or fuel. fuel or stator if it's up to 2004 and fuel only if it's 2004 plus.

Taffy

I have to kick start mine from cold usually only about 2 kicks when taken from the garage but can be about 5 to 10 if towed on a trailer or a truck bed.

you have to find the top of the compression stroke and kick.

regards

Alright. It has always started on the e-starter before.

I'll try kicking it.

With or without choke?

Use the choke should fire up straight away or second kick,if you kick it correctly. i had the same problem changes fuel, oil change, checked spark plug pulled choke and brrrrrrrahhhhhhh its all systems go!!!!!

Kick it correctly.. I guess I can work on my technique

Thanks, I'll try!

But could valves cause any of this? I know I should check them soon..

For Sure valves can cause this. Just do the Mandatory check's and replace all mentioned above, all should be ok.

He said it ran fine when he parked it, so unless the Norse God of Tight Intakes did something to it over the winter, I doubt the valves are the issue. :D

Yeah it ran fine before I parked it.

I can't see whats wrong with it.. Fuel + spark + air, what more is needed? :D

It has been standing in the garage for 4-5 months..

hmm, any other tips? :D

Nope no other tips, just check the valves and kick it just the right way.
Could be clogged carburetor, bad spark plug, spark plug connector, ignition coil...
But I'd put my money on the valves first. 15 minutes and then you know.
If it still doesn't start I'd exchange the spark plug and/or spark plug connector.

And yes the garage demon do strange things to bikes even when it's just standing there. :bounce3:

I tried to start it now, still nothing.

I got a spark, and the spark plug smells fuel after trying to start it.

Guess I have to check the valves, but I have never done it before.

What tools are needed? Does the radiator have to come off?

Didnt find any good guides..

Thanks! :)

make sure the carb linkage/cable is not hanging up above idle. if its too high, the start circuit won't be right.
when next trying it, hold the throttle wide open and with the compression release pulled, kick it thru about ten times. let go of the comp release, kick it thru slowly until you hear the hiss of air rushing in the air filter and stop at the first resistance. pull the comp release and gently push the kicker about 3". comp release off, kicker to the very top, and strong kick all the way thru. a couple of these and you should get fire. if not, repeat using full choke (and be careful you're not pulling the red hotstart instead  )

radiator can stay if you're careful. i always remove the mag cover and spark plug and use a t-handle on the flywheel nut to turn it (not a ratchet) clockwise to tdc. pull the inspection covers and as you turn the flywheel, note when the intakes go down, then back up. you are approaching tdc. if you have no idea where your tdc marks are, download the manual or put a flexible something in the plug hole and turn it over gently til it just stops going up. using a small screwdriver and a 10mm box end, loosen the nut, turn the screw in gently, then back it out 1/6 turn, hold the screw and tighten the nut.

Thanks! I will try that!

I got unlucky and pulled the wire out of the spark plug connector

I thought I had to order a new one, but how is the wire connected to the connector?

I believe the wire is just screwed into the spark plug connector.

Adjusted the valves now, but not sure if I did it correctly cause I had to tighten it.

Still wont start.. Think im gonna call a shop tomorrow :)
