hi

so i started jetting my bike with one of taffs jet kits now i cant seam to get it to idel off choke tryed an aray of idel jets from 35 to 45 and i have an adjustable idel air jet. ??

i even put all the original jets and needle back in and it still will not idel off choke im starting to think something droped out when i was playing and blowing air through the carb??

riding the bike it goes well on throttle but as soon as you snap it shut its bang bang stall yet its fine with the choke out

below is a pic of the hole where the idel air jet lives does it look right or am i missing something ??

thanks dazza

Hi Daz,

Done a far bit of work on this carb and mine is of the same year, I always had bad idle, the culprit was the wheels on the slide had worn grooves in the carb body and there was a lot of front to back movement on the slide. filled these grooves in with Devcon, completely different bike, to much air getting in on closed throttle, check the baffle plate O ring as well. I think a lot of people over look the carb body and don't realise the wear. I have no rattle on the slide what so ever now.

Yes that looks ok to me, and no you haven't lost anything. Where have you got the air screw set, I'm running 3/8 of a turn on a 32.5 PJ

Failing that strip down your carb and squirt WD40 from the back with the PAS removed, make sure it's coming out of all the holes it's supposed to.

Regards

Sparks.

thanks for the relpy.
i will check the body of the carb for wear it just seams a bit strange that it ideled fine before i striped it down and now nothing

as for pilot air screw i just follow the table in the owners doc and ive tried pilot jets 35, 37.5, 40, & std 45

and it will not run off throttle with any of them ?

i feel i have just about tryed every thing i must of had the carb on and off 30 times

and its still unrideable .

Did you try 1 turn out on the adjustable pilot air screw? (the one on the left)

Check for a Air leak, check clamps on inlet are tight and rubber is seated correctly. Spray some water or crc around inlet you will hear the idle change. I have even had a clamp fail looked like it was done up but was broken near clamp nut. Drove me nuts trying to find out why it wouldn't idle.

Hi Daz,

Forget about PJ size this won't really have much bearing on the idle as long as your PAS is set to suit. Put in a 35PJ set PAS to 3/8 out and work off the FS, I think this part of the circuit may be giving you the problem.

Thanks for the replys plenty here I can give a go lots I haven't tryed I'll keep you posted

Thanks again Dazza

My 2007 650 would not idle. I re-jetted the pilot many times, ended up with a 60 pilot jet, and a low-speed mixture adjustment with a knurled finger knob.

I don't know how to link to my post, but here's the story:

Before:

Hard starting, after 3 or 4 long cranking attempts, I would always jump it instead of running the battery totally flat.

With choke on, idle ran very high (because idle adjust was set so high)

Throttle response off idle was violent and unpredictable. Think about it – the idle stop was cranked way up just to get the bike to idle, so the slide is way up, sucking lots of air and barely enough gas to idle. Then you crack the throttle, which gives it even more air, plus a shot of gas from the accelerator pump, and all of a sudden it has a mixture it likes, and you’ve got 10 instantaneous horsepower from just cracking the throttle open.

Idle speed would creep up, and of course I wouldn’t notice that until into a rough downhill section, wanting to plonk through. Clutch and brakes are then the only choice.

Lots of popping and backfiring when throttle was closed

After:

Starting is very quick and battery-friendly
Idle while choked is slightly above normal
Choke can be taken off soon after starting
Idle is smooth and doesn’t vary in speed
Popping and backfiring are gone
Throttle response is smooth, predictable, and immensely, tremendously useful!

Hi all progress Is going well on the carb I have filled the groves in the body of the carb and replaced the clips on the rubber and she almost ticks over I belive it's now just a case of playing with the mixture screw and paj screw. But it is a thousand times better with minimal play in the slide ;)

There you go Daz, I knew it would make a big difference, just get your slow circuit dialed in and your away. Just makes you wonder how many other people are suffering carb body wear and end up chasing there own *** trying to get the slow speed circuit to carburate properly.

I think I might of touched on a subject here not much talked about. You should of noticed all that rattling from the slide has gone as well .

If like mine you should also feel the throttle response is a lot sharper as well.

Regards

Sparks.

Yes it was surprising how much play was in the slide the groves were quite large, filled them with liquid metal and the play is now minimal and she runs thanks for your input there sparks Worked a treat .
