Hi all,

Finally changed the oil in my 570. Got it with ~37 hours on the clock, last change at ~25 IIRC, now at 40-42 (can't remember).

Found some swarf in the lower screen and on the magnet. Most of the fragments looked similar, varying in length mostly. Seemed to come from something circular and long-ish, just under a millimeter in average width. In various states of being chopped up. Miiiiight have had one a brassy looking side, one silvery.

Nothing in the main oil filter, head banjo bolt filter clean as a whistle.

Is this cause for concern in your opinion?

Can we tell approximately where this could come from?

And is there any recommended course of action? I was thinking to ride it, listening carefully to the motor, and changing oil again in around 5-10 hours.

Thanks! :)

Thank you!! :bounce3:

FWIW a local KTM guy - total KTM perv! and car/bike mechanic also agreed that the pics look fine.

Edit - another local guy has offered to dispose of the vehicle for me :) heheh

Hi all
I don't want to scare you, but have a look here:

It's a different situation because my engine had 330 hours when it happened.

Yep! Saw your post ... was kind of nervous AND relieved both :) Nervous that it's the same, but relieved that I had less :)

What did the particles look like for you?

Don't be nervous :)
When I had this problem, I removed the particles from magnet with the finger and I understood that these particles came from a chrome part.
They were bright (like glitters).
I shown to my mechanic and he said me that they could came either from crankshaft bearings or from rod.
It was the second option.
I agree with you, my screw had much more particles on magnet.

P.S. sorry for my english, I hope you can understand.

This is what I saw on mine and that was the end of my motor, keep an eye on the screen and an ear out for bottom end noise.

Hmm, that does look kind of similar-ish ... Similar enough to indeed monitor and listen closely to the motor, and frequent oil changes.

My particles did look a biii-it more uniform than yours and somehow slightly different, less glittery I do think, less randomly shaped, and a touch of a golden color to some sides. But they could very well be the same.

I'll look at your thread berglsmerg! I remember seeing it a while back I think?

bergfe390, I understand you, clear as day! thank you!

edit: What would the bottom-end sounds I'm watching for be like? Apart from just "hmm that's a new sound" from that general area. Scrunchy noises, or more like ticking, or heavier clanks? Or all of the above? :D

edit 2: I think I'd rather open her up too soon than too late ... I'll come back next oil change - soon! 5 hrs? - and post swarf pictures ... or hopefully not ... and consult for your advice re. having a look inside.

if you wash the sludge off with solvent you can see a bit more.

sounds like you did already ?

in any case the hard silver glittery particles are usually from bearings and if you don't have any of those kind of particles it should be OK :D

this made no strange sound at all .. at least not loud enough to hear, just a few glittery flakes from the roller and some grey fiber like stuff from the rod

Hey Berglsmerg,
Did you see any metal on the top screen in the head? I ask as I rarely check the top screen.
Hope you're well mate :)

G'day cobber

Davo, I'm flat out like a lizard drinking ! Thanks for asking.

Mate, no I didn't see anything on the top screen, the top end is pressure lubed and the cam chain is on the opposite side to the crank case reed valve so I guess there isn't much chance of crank case swarf being dragged up into the top by the cam chain, there was some sand in there though  And I practically never check the top screen either, oil scavenging in that area is only effective when the bike is near or at 30 degrees declined from horizontal, there is a massive return to sump drain near the flywheel for oil to travel through normally.

Solvent is the go busie shellite works well. Just one bad roller in the big end bearing, ain't that a ***** !
